Trade-off: Deal splits Democrats between business, labor

Contrary to a letter appearing recently in another publication, 15 locks were not changed at Wilkes-Barre Township&#8217;s fire department. There were 15 keys made for one door that each active member received. Mayor Carl Kuren does not have a key, but the municipal building does in case of emergencies.So, obviously, if the former chief is no longer legally allowed on the property, his possessions should no longer be stored on the property. We are a fire department, not a storage unit.Mayor Kuren is working very closely with the fire department board. He has helped with bills and has given the fire department $1,140 for training and $288 for textbooks for three members to go for the training they needed. He also helped get the command vehicle back in service after five years of neglect.As for the board of the fire department, we do not feel threatened or scared, and are not under duress. We are addressing ourselves as the board only because we cannot speak for the body. The board members are the ones working very closely with Mayor Kuren.The board was working very closely with Mayor Kuren on helping to purchase a ladder truck. Until it came to our knowledge that $150,000 was missing from the Relief Association funds for undocumented loans from the previous members in power of the Relief Association and fire department Executive Board. We, as the current Executive Board and Relief Association officers, feel that without Mayor Kuren and the Wilkes-Barre Township council members, it would not be possible to return the money to the Relief Association, so we can receive the state funding that has been waiting for us the past five years, which totals $150,000.In closing, Mayor Kuren has promised so much and has given so much more to support the Wilkes-Barre Township Fire Department. Mayor Kuren was the one who initiated the close relationship between the fire department and council.
