Several local homeless agencies were awarded grants from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of a $1 billion national
campaign to provide more housing and support services to the homeless. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18 was one of the six groups awarded continuum of
care grants in Luzerne County. Project coordinator Marianne Argenio said the
$189,627 grant will be used for a seven-week summer program, after-school
tutoring at shelters, and transporting students living in shelters to school. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Noel Duffy, director of special projects at the Commission on Economic
Opportunity, said his organization will use the $782,456 grant to renew its
homeless case management program. The Catholic Youth Center of Wyoming Valley
will use the $996,054 for evening and overnight child care services. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Other organizations awarded grants included the Housing Development
Corporation of Northeastern Pennsylvania, $499,882 and Catholic Social
Services, $505,076. Emergency shelter grants were given to Luzerne County,
$217,000; Wilkes-Barre, $84,000; and Scranton, $146,000. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
