Wyoming Valley West field hockey standout Jill Rosick recently made a verbal
commitment to accept an athletic scholarship from the University of Maine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rosick's commitment is nonbinding, but it does end the recruiting process
for the daughter of John and Dorothy Rosick of Larksville. Although she can
change her mind, according to NCAA rules, schools aren't allowed to try to
dissuade her from that decision. Rosick will make the decision official when
she signs a letter of intent in February. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Rosick also considered offers from Villanova University and Temple
University. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``It was probably the people,'' Rosick said of her decision. ``I loved the
atmosphere there and everything about the school. It's an honor to work with
Diane Madl, with her being on the Olympic team. The coaches there are really
amazing.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Maine is coached by Terry Kix. Madl, a Crestwood graduate who played at the
1996 Summer Olympics for the U.S. women's field hockey team, is an assistant
for the Black Bears. Jen Johnstone, a Lake-Lehman graduate, is a
center/mid-fielder for Maine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rosick was a four-year starter for Valley West, helping the Spartans win
three District 2 Class 3A championships. She was named first team all-state
and academic all-state this season by the Pennsylvania High School Field
Hockey Coaches Association. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Rosick plans to major in psychology at Maine and is considering a career in
child psychology or sports psychology. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Messimer an all-American &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Crestwood High School graduate Carissa Messimer was recently named second
team all-America by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Messimer, a junior forward, finished the season as the third-leading scorer
for the University of Maryland. She finished with 13 goals and 10 assists in
24 games for the Terps. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Messimer tied a record for total assists in the NCAA Division I tournament
with seven. Maryland finished as runner-up. It was the second time Messimer
started in an championship contest for the Terps. She had the winning goal as
a freshman in the 1999 title game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Crestwood stays 2A &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Crestwood High School will remain a Class 2A team in field hockey for the
2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, according to recently released PIAA enrollment
figures. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Crestwood has been near the cutoff between Class 2A and 3A over the years,
and this instance was no different. Crestwood has 353 female high school
students. Schools with 357 and above are automatically in Class 3A. Schools
with 356 and lower can be in Class 2A, or in Class 3A if they opt to move up. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Crestwood has been a Class 2A school the past four seasons, and was Class
3A in the six seasons before that. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 No Wyoming Valley Conference field hockey teams changed classifications,
according to the figures. Here's a breakdown of the league for the next two
seasons with enrollment figures in parentheses. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Class 3A: Hazleton Area (954), Wyoming Valley West (625), Delaware Valley
(582), Wallenpaupack (450), Abington Heights (443), Pittston Area (420),
Coughlin (388), Tunkhannock (382), Berwick (369), Honesdale (366). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Class 2A: Crestwood (353), East Stroudsburg North (322), Bishop Hoban
(282), Dallas (273), Lake-Lehman (272), Nanticoke (264), Meyers (245),
Montrose (227), GAR (206), Lackawanna Trail (176), Wyoming Seminary (160), Elk
Lake (159), Northwest (142) and Bishop O'Reilly (140). &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
