Ailing Player Quits Wilkes Team

Plains Township native Kevin Gryboski had quite a vacation this week. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The 28-year-old pitcher formerly in the Seattle Mariners organization found
out Friday, while relaxing in the Virgin Islands, that he was traded to the
Atlanta Braves. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Wilkes University sports information director John Seitzinger said
Gryboski, who will fly back to the area tonight, is excited about his
prospects with his new team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gryboski, a former Colonel ace, had an outstanding season at Triple-A
Tacoma (Wash.) as a reliever last season. He was second in the Pacific Coast
League in saves (22) and second in appearances (58). He had 50 strikeouts in
60 innings and did not allow a home run. He had three saves in the postseason
as Tacoma and New Orleans shared the PCL title. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He was rumored in trade talk much of the off-season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I was kind of hoping (to get traded), it's a bad thing to say, but I was
kind of hoping just because of all the pitching depth that Seattle has, just
to give me an opportunity somewhere else,'' he said in a recent Times Leader
article. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 His chances of getting traded seemed unlikely when he was placed on
Seattle's 2002 40-man spring training roster. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Gryboski could end up playing in front of local fans. If he doesn't
initially make the Braves major league team, he'd likely play for the Triple-A
Richmond Braves of the International League, who visit the
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons on June 14-17. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder also will be the feature attraction at the Wilkes
Baseball Clinic, set for Feb. 3 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Marts Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
