Obviously, being named to an all-state team is an individual honor. But
when Bishop Hoban's Traci Kazmerski recently became the only Wyoming Valley
Conference and District 2 volleyball player to earn the honor this year, the
senior pointed out the larger significance of the feat. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I think one of the things that makes it the most special was coming into
Hoban, we just started the program when I was a freshman,'' said Kazmerski,
named to the Class 2A Girls All-State Second Team. ``Just to show that it's
possible to build a program from scratch, I think that's a tribute to our
coaching staff.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The 5-foot-9 senior also was voted to the Wyoming Valley Conference
first-team after Hoban won the District 2 Class 2A title. The Lady Argents
went 18-0 during the regular season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kazmerski, also a starting guard for Hoban's basketball team, will attend
Notre Dame in the fall. She said she may eventually try out for the Fighting
Irish women's volleyball team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I don't know,'' said Kazmerski, who will major in chemistry. ``I know
they're pretty good. I think as soon as I go out there I am going to focus on
my studies, and maybe play a little intramurals and see where it goes after
that.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Boys basketball &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 GAR vs. Meyers, a longstanding cross-city rivalry, has taken on added
significance this season with both teams fielding squads likely to make
postseason runs. But a school just a short drive across the river, Bishop
O'Reilly, has entered the fray and is developing a budding three-way rivalry
with both Wilkes-Barre schools. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Queensmen handed the Grenadiers their first league loss of the season
last Tuesday, forcing a three-way tie atop the Division III standings at the
season's halfway mark. They beat Meyers in a first-round first-half playoff,
and fell to GAR in a rematch Sunday, this time for the first-half crown. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Matchups between GAR, O'Reilly and Meyers in the second half should be
exciting. Meyers is at O'Reilly on Feb. 1, GAR is at Meyers on Feb. 8, and the
regular season wraps up with O'Reilly at GAR, which will be the fourth meeting
of the season between the two squads. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Dallas coach Ted Jackson was recently named as the East team's head coach
in the second annual East-West All-Star Game. The game will be played at 7
p.m. Saturday, June 29, at Mansion Park in Altoona and will feature some of
the best high school seniors in Pennsylvania. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Jackson will become only the second person to coach in the East-West Game
and the Big 33 Classic. Last year, Manheim Central coach Mike Williams led the
East to a victory in the inaugural game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The players for the East-West Game will be chosen immediately following the
selection of the Pennsylvania players for the Big 33 team. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lakeland quarterback Evan Kraky was part of a feature in ``Student
Sports'' magazine that highlighted record-breaking quarterbacks throughout the
country. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kraky finished his career with 7,683 passing yards, eclipsing the mark of
7,342 set by Berwick's Ron Powlus. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The 2002 and 2003 WVC schedules should be ready shortly. WVC football
committee member Sandy Mackay said Wednesday that a few kinks need to be
worked out. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Roseanne Barr couldn't sing it. Neither could Carl Lewis. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 But for Seton Catholic sophomore guard Amanda McCulloch, belting out the
national anthem is second nature. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I practice it a lot,'' said McCulloch, who sang it prior to Monday's game
with Bishop Hafey. ``It's easy for me anymore. I've sang it so many times.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 So many times that it's less stressful than playing basketball. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``If you mess up singing, no one really notices,'' McCulloch said, ``but if
you mess up in a game, everyone notices.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 McCulloch and sophomore guard Alex Grant alternate singing the national
anthem at home games. Could a duet be in the offering? &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``We did it last year at the last game,'' McCulloch said, ``so we may do it
again this year, too. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lake-Lehman's Danielle Kern became the latest player to score her 1,000th
career point. Kern reached the milestone Jan. 11 against Nanticoke. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Wyoming Area's Cara Bell has been injecting some offense into the
Warriors' attack. She has averaged 18.5 points in the last two games. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Bishop Hoban lost its third inside player this week when 5-foot-10
sophomore Jullian Falkowski was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her leg.
She is expected to miss the rest of the season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Falkowski joins 6-foot sophomore Andrea Krakosky, who is out the rest of
the season after ACL surgery, and standout 6-foot-1 junior Meredith Alexis,
who is sidelined indefinitely with mononucleosis, on the injury list. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Pittston Area's busy weekend might have contributed to its big WVC West
victory against Berwick on Wednesday. The Patriots went 3-1 at the Jersey
Shore Duals, routing Johnstown 62-12 and Jersey Shore 56-12 and defeating
Athens 41-28. They lost a tough one to Kittanning 34-31. Kyle Emerick (103)
won all four bouts, Scotty Emerick (119) and Steve Barber (130) went 3-0 with
two pins and a technical fall apiece, and Pat O'Hara (152) went 3-1 for
Pittston Area. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Tunkhannock also fared well at Jersey Shore, going 2-2 and giving coach
Frank Wadas his 300th career victory. Robert Wilson (135) was 4-0 with three
pins, Joe Mattioli (140) won all four bouts and won twice by fall and Jake
Mattioli (125) went 4-0 with a pin and technical fall. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 WVC teams won't have much time to catch their breaths after the final day
of the league season. The WVC schedule ends Thursday with two big divisional
matches - in the West, Pittston Area is at Wyoming Valley West and in the
East, Crestwood is at GAR. District duals begin the following day with
quarterfinals at The University of Scranton (Class 2A) and Pittston Area (3A)
and conclude on Saturday with semifinals and finals in both classes at
Pittston Area. The state duals tournament begins on Feb. 5 and moves to
Hersheypark Arena for semis and finals on Feb. 8-9. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
