WBS Penguins rally to force overtime before falling to Lehigh Valley

Hazleton Area girls basketball punched its ticket to the District 2/4 Class 6A championship with a 51-48 victory over Scranton on Monday night.
				The top-seeded Cougars (13-7) will play second-seeded Wilkes-Barre Area (12-5) for the championship at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
				The Cougars used a 22-point first quarter to jump out to a lead. Julia Mrochko led all Hazleton Area scorers with 15 points and Brooke Boretski added 11 points.
				Finley Bittenbender had a game-high 20 points for Scranton and Lanee Olson had 11 points.
				Wilkes-Barre Area 42, Williamsport 37 OT
				The Wolfpack defeated Williamsport in overtime to advance to the D2/4-6A championship game at 5:30 p.m. Friday against Hazleton Area at Mohegan Sun Arena.
				WBA (12-5) won this game despite scoring only three points in both the first and fourth quarters. The Wolfpack defeated Williamsport earlier in the season by 14 points.
				Vanessa Luna had 13 points to lead the Wolfpack and Shelby Ardo Boyko added 11 points.
				Enya Green Pratt led Williamsport with 12 points and Kailee Helmrich had 10 points.
				Abington Heights 61, Crestwood 31
				Crestwood fell behind after a 28-point first quarter from Abington Heights and was unable to recover, falling in the D2-5A semifinals. Top-seeded Abington Heights (12-2) will take on second-seeded Dallas (9-5) in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
				Helena Jardine scored 10 points to pace Crestwood, which finished its season at 8-10.
				Clair Marion had 20 points for Abington Heights, Anna Scoblick had 14 and Lauren Lombardo added 11.
				Berwick 46, Nanticoke Area 27
				Berwick used a big second half, outscoring Nanticoke Area 29-6 in the final two quarters to advance to the D2-4A championship where the third-seeded Dawgs (13-3) will take on top-seed Scranton Prep (16-1).
				Katie Starr had a double-double &mdash; 13 points and 11 rebounds &mdash; to lead the Bulldogs. Renny Murphy also had 11 points and Rachel Whitenight had seven assists.
				Riley Baird had 10 points to lead the Trojanettes.

				In the D2-2A girls semifinals, Old Forge defeated Elk Lake 51-40 and Holy Cross topped Lackawanna Trail 71-45.
				In a D2-3A boys semifinal, Riverside defeated Lakeland 76-71.

				WOMEN&rsquo;S BASKETBALL
				Alvernia 75, Wilkes 70
				Wilkes fell to 1-5 on the season with a non-conference loss to Alvernia.
				Four Colonels reached double-digits led by Maddie Kelley with 18 points. Katelyn Kinczel followed with 12 points, Brenna Babcock had 11 and Gabby Smicherko added 10.
				MEN&rsquo;S BASKETBALL
				Alvernia 95, Wilkes 81
				The Colonels finished their regular season schedule with a loss to Alvernia despite 20 plus-point performances from Donovan Breeding, Drake Marshall and Trent Fisher.
				Breeding led the group with 23 points and both Marshall and Fisher had 21-point double-doubles. Marshall grabbed 11 rebounds and Fisher had 10 boards.
