WILKES-BARRE - Going into Sunday's championship game of the Ramada Inn/Monarch
Classic, King's was aware that Neumann College's quickness would pose a major
challenge. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 And it did. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The shorter but lightning-quick Knights induced the Monarchs into a rapid
pace in the early going, with Neumann getting the upper hand. But after the
Knights took a seven-point lead, King's took command of the boards and control
of the game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Junior guard Dannie Evans fired in a game-high 21 points, including five
three-point baskets, as the Monarchs posted an 83-76 victory over Neumann at
Scandlon Gymnasium to claim the title. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I think we were sluggish in the early going,'' King's coach J.P. Andrejko
said. ``We didn't have as much intensity as we did in the last night (against
Salisbury), but we played well in the second half. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``We really hit the boards,'' Andrejko added. ``Dannie made some big shots
and he did a great job defensively.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 King's (6-3) wound up dominating the boards, outrebounding Neumann 47-35.
Sophomore center Marty O'Hora turned in a monster effort. He snagged a
game-high 15 rebounds and scored 15 points. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Monarchs made an important defensive adjustment. Senior forward Kasim
Holloman was assigned to guard the Knights' leading scorer, Rahim Washington,
but Andrejko put Evans on Washington midway through the first half. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Washington had 12 points at intermission, but was limited to just five
points in the second half. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``Dannie did to Washington what Kasim did to (Salisbury's) Hasheem
Alexander,'' Andrejko said. ``He kept him in check.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The teams played on even terms during the first 10 minutes of the game.
King's led 16-14 on a three-pointer by Evans with 13:30 left in the half, but
then Neumann made a nice run. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Knights took a 33-27 lead on a three-point play by senior center Omar
Warthen with 6:15 remaining in the half and widened the gap to 35-28 on a
Chris Ralston goal at the 5:20 mark. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 However, the Monarchs countered with a surge of their own. They took a
47-43 halftime lead when Evans nailed a three-point basket with just two
seconds left in the frame. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I was getting some excellent looks and my shots were falling,'' Evans
said. ``They set some great screens for me.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Neumann (7-6) made another run at the start of the second half, trimming
the Monarchs' lead to 49-48 on a three-point basket by Mark Mushinski. King's
quickly widened the margin to 54-48 on a pair of treys by Holloman. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The Monarchs took their biggest lead, 64-56, on an Evans three-pointer with
10:10 left in the game, but Neumann refused to fold. The Knights fought back
to tie the score at 67-67 on a jumper by Washington at the 5:32 mark. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Again, King's answered quickly. The Monarchs surged ahead, 72-67, on a
basket by Thomas Moore and a three-pointer by Evans. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``We came up with some big baskets when we needed them,'' Evans said. ``Our
inside players came up big.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Warthen, who led Neumann with 18 points, was a major force in the first
half. But King's doubled-teamed him inside the paint in the second half and it
paid off. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Warthen picked up his fourth foul with 10 minutes left, when he threw an
elbow after grabbing a defensive rebound and sat out for more than six
minutes. He wasn't a factor when he returned with just four minutes left. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Evans admitted that Warthen intimidated King's in the early going. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``He was bullying us,'' Evans said. ``He was banging us around and he kept
them in the game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``In the second half, we said enough is enough,'' Evans added. ``Our post
players were effective in boxing him out.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Evans led King's in assists with five, while tournament MVP Holloman tossed
in 16 points. Washington scored 17 points for the Knights, including four
three-point baskets. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Andrejko was pleased with his team's performance. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``It's a good win,'' Andrejko said. ``We need to learn how to win, and this
was a big step in that direction.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Susquehanna (5-5) cruised to a 90-67 victory over Salisbury (2-9) in the
third-place game. The Crusaders, who placed four starters in double figures,
were led by Nick Griffiths with 14 points. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Named to the All-Tournament team were King's Dannie Evans, Neumann's Omar
Warthen and Rahim Washington, Susquehanna's Nick Griffiths and Salisbury's
John Wulff. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
