LEHMAN TWP. - A little more than two weeks ago, Chad Derhammer was
recovering from football season. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A junior running back for the Black Knights on the gridiron, Derhammer
decided to come back out for wrestling and started practicing on Dec. 23. He
said he wanted to stay in shape for football and maybe help Lehman on the mat.
He lost his first match of the season on Saturday and was pinned against
Hazleton Area early in the second period. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On Tuesday, in a battle of Wyoming Valley Conference unbeatens, Derhammer
validated his reasons for returning to wrestling. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Derhammer pinned Berwick's Nick Tsirgotis in 49 seconds at 171 pounds,
clinching a 42-27 Black Knights victory to give Lehman a big leg up in the WVC
West Division title race. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``I just wanted to go out and do my best,'' said Derhammer, who hasn't
wrestled since his freshman year, when he was a junior high champ. ``I worked
hard in practice and gave it my all.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Derhammer's pin closed a tremendous bonus-point run by Lehman (7-0, 7-0
WVC), during which it won five of six matches by fall to build a 42-6 lead.
Lehman's six total pins was the difference in what wound up being an even
match - each team won seven bouts. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``We never expected to get pinned six times,'' said Berwick coach Ernie
Yates, whose team fell to 5-1 overall and in the WVC. ``When you win seven
bouts, you expect a closer match.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The match's intensity on the mat was matched in the stands, as an overflow
crowd had fans both standing and sitting wherever there was free space. Also,
there were two near-fights involving Lehman fans and two Berwick wrestlers,
necessitating a small police presence. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Derhammer, who weighed 190 pounds after football season, worked a half
nelson for the pin (his first varsity win) over Tsirgotis, wrestling his first
varsity bout. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After his hand was raised, Derhammer jogged off to the mat and was met by
jubilant Lehman coach Phil Lipski, who uncharacteristically hugged Derhammer,
yelled approvingly at him and picked him up over his shoulders. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``We knew that one was important. It could've went either way,'' said
Lipski. ``I was a little pumped up ... a little. I haven't been that excited
for awhile.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 He had good reason to be. Lehman's John Houssock started the match with a
pin at 119. Berwick's Nick Yalch had sucked down to 125, and a showdown with
Lehman's Matt Dragon did not materialize. Yalch, a three-time district
champion, nearly lost but scored a reversal on Andy Josuweit with six seconds
left to win 3-2. Afterward, Yalch was treated for what Yates called ``slight
dehydration.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lehman seemed to ride Josuweit's near-upset. Dragon received a forfeit at
130 and Lehman's Jeremy Schutz (11-3) followed with an impressive pin (3:07)
at 135 over Anthony Bujno (12-6), who hadn't been pinned all year. Derek White
(7-2) gave the Black Knights a 24-3 lead with an unlikely pin (5:29) at 140
over Thomas Bomboy (8-8), another Bulldog who rarely gets pinned. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 After Berwick's Ryan Mardon won an 8-2 decision at 145, Matt Stuart got
another pin (1:26) for Lehman and teammate Willie Weber then notched the
quickest pin of the night in 24 seconds at 160. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lehman's move to bump its lineup down between 130 and 171 proved to be a
smart one, and although the Black Knights should win the West, Lipski isn't
relaxing. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 ``We have to keep our hats on,'' he said. ``We haven't won anything yet.'' &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Berwick won the last five bouts, but it was too little, too late. Shawn
Maczuga (189) and Jeremiah Morris (275) won by fall for the Bulldogs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
