KINGSTON — A Wilkes-Barre man jailed after his arrest earlier this week for initiating a pursuit while driving a stolen vehicle was arraigned Wednesday on charges he stole a vehicle last year.

Kingston police said Jose Ramon Calva, 19, of Poplar Street, stole a 2018 Hyundai Sonata from the area of South Maple Avenue and Price Street on Oct. 19, according to court records.

The Hyundai was recovered from a parking lot on Parkview Circle, Wilkes-Barre, court records say.

Police said Calva admitted to stealing the vehicle during an interview on Jan. 27.

Calva was arraigned by District Judge Joseph D. Spagnuolo Jr. in Luzerne County Central Court on a single count of theft. Spagnuolo jailed Calva at the county correctional facility without bail due to another case filed Monday by Wilkes-Barre police.

City police allege Calva failed to stop when an officer heard him screeching tires of a Chevrolet and speeding at a high rate of speed on Beekman Street Monday. City police said the Chevrolet was reported stolen in the Bloomsburg, Columbia County, area.

Calva initiated a pursuit on several South Wilkes-Barre streets into Hanover Township and Nanticoke before crashing into two parked vehicles in the area of Old Newport and Center streets, Newport Township, court records say.

Four juveniles were inside the stolen Chevrolet, city police said.

Calva was charged by city police with multiple offenses and jailed Monday for lack of $250,000 bail.
