KINGSTON - While many Luzerne County school districts are watching their
fund balances dwindle away, Wyoming Valley West School Board members learned
Wednesday night their balance is steadily increasing - by $261,000 last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 A fund balance, money carried over from one year to the next, should be
used for emergency expenses. Ideally, the amount equals 5 percent to 10
percent of the district's budget. As it stands, Wyoming Valley West's fund
balance is at approximately 4 percent. More specific figures were not
available Wednesday night. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Board member Ray Lowery, who joked that such positive news could not be
offered without a counter balance, said the district should anticipate its
contribution to the Pennsylvania Public School Employees' Retirement System to
jump to between $375,000 and $400,000 in the coming school year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 In other business, the board approved the following hirings: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Stanley Scibek, utility person for Spartan Stadium, at $11.45 per hour. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Scott Wallace, high school custodian, at $9.73 per hour. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Lindsey Vancavage, middle school special education/learning support
teacher, at $32,363 per year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Allison Magagna, high school earth space/biology teacher, at $31,363 per
year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Robert Lushefski Jr., custodian, at $9.73 per hour. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Joseph Casey, middle school special education teacher for the second
semester, at a rate established by union contract. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Kalen Churcher &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
