There have been two controversial stories in the newspapers and media
lately. The first focuses on the death penalty and outgoing Gov. George Ryan's
decision (R-Ill.) to commute the death sentences of 167 inmates to life in
prison with his blanket amnesty. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Governors in too many states have broad, virtually unchecked constitutional
powers for pardons and clemency. Some of these states should take a look at
Pennsylvania's laws regarding the death penalty. This involves the case of the
notorious killer Robert ``Mudman'' Simon, the Warlock gang member, who was
paroled by Gov. Bob Casey in 1995, after serving 13 years for murder. He then
killed a New Jersey policeman the year after he was freed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Public outrage provoked the lawmakers to overhaul the state's pardons and
parole system, stripping the power from the governor and giving it to a
five-member board. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 The second story concerns abortion. Jan. 22, 2003, marked the 30th
anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision giving American women
the right to legal abortion. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 There are an estimated 30 million American women who collectively have had
more than 41 million abortions since 1973. Roughly 1.2 million abortions are
performed nationwide each year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 Let me say to Gov. Ryan, Barry Scheck (of the Innocence Project) and other
pro-abortionists: What about the innocence of the 41 million aborted fetuses
since 1973? You worry so much about the convicted murderers on death row. Also
the countries such as Canada, Mexico and the European countries, where the
death penalty is reason to exclude a country from membership in the European
Union. But as long as the countries have legalized abortion, they'll always
have the death penalty. It's a double standard. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
