Students put on Jeopardy-style game show about local history

DALLAS &#8211; Brian Drouse led the way with 12 kills and six service points, including three aces, Monday when Dallas shook out of a tough start to the Wyoming Valley Conference boys volleyball season by defeating visiting Lake-Lehman, 25-13, 25-17, 25-14.Before matches this week against winless opponents Lake-Lehman and Tunkhannock, Dallas opened the season 0-4 while going against teams with combined records of 13-7.&#8220;I knew we had some new kids, but we had a few varsity returnees,&#8221; Dallas coach Nick Diaco said. &#8220;I expected a little quicker start.&#8221;The Mountaineers had lost in five games against Berwick and were swept in three other matches, including against unbeaten North Pocono.&#8220;The season started off pretty sloppy,&#8221; Diaco said. &#8220;We had too many mental errors. In this match, it finally came together and we were able to run plays, make good decisions and pull out the win.&#8221;Improved serving was a big part of the victory.&#8220;Within our first few games of the season, we matched our missed serves for the whole year from last year,&#8221; Diaco said. &#8220;That was pretty disappointing.&#8220;This match, we only missed a few serves and everybody kept their focus to keep the ball in play.&#8221;That became a point of emphasis in trying to get the season turned around.&#8220;Most of our recent practices were devoted to serving because it&#8217;s such a key part of the game and we&#8217;d been struggling,&#8221; Diaco said.Jared Thompson had seven service points, five of which came on aces. Eric Pincofski added five service points and three aces.Drouse, a senior middle hitter, and Thompson, a sophomore outside hitter, are two of the four returning starters from a team that went 4-8 last season. Juniors Steven Darling, an outside hitter/setter, and Joey Fiorello, the libero, are also back.Darling had five kills and a team-high 21 assists against Lake-Lehman. Fiorello had nine digs.Lake-Lehman has started 0-5 after going winless a year ago.Mike Kostrobala, who also coaches the Black Knights in soccer, took over the program when Josh Scarbriel resigned right before the start of the season.
