The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission in Harrisburg voted to investigate the rate hike requested by UGI Electric Division.

The 4-0 vote Thursday by the PUC suspended the request for up to seven months and set the stage for the assignment of the case to the PUC’s Office of Administrative Law Judge to investigate and recommend a decision.

Last month UGI Electric filed for annual base rate increase of $8.7 million to pay for ongoing system improvements and investments in its information technology for customer services support. The utility that serves approximately 64,400 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Luzerne and Wyoming counties last received approval for a base rate increase in 2018.

Under the proposed increase, the utility said the monthly bill for a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hour of electricity and UGI as the default power supply service company would increase to $123.83 from $110.18 or 12.4%.

Likewise, the monthly bill for a commercial customer using 1,000 kwh would increase by 12.6 % to $135.62 from $120.40.

However, the opposite would occur for industrial customers. The utility said the monthly bill for an industrial customer using 50,000 kwh would decrease by 0.9% to $3,897.36 from $3,931.30.

If an increase is approved it would appear in the delivery charge component of customers’ bills. The charge is assessed to pay for the ownership, operation and maintenance of a company’s electric distribution system, customer service and emergency response services.

The proposed increase would not affect the generation supply rate commodity charge or the amount a utility pays to purchase electricity on the wholesale market without a markup to the customers who receive default power service from UGI Electric.
