With Scranton/Wilkes-Barre finally getting something going offensively against Durham on Thursday night at PNC Field, heavy rains stopped the team&#8217;s momentum and the game as the RailRiders fell to the Bulls 8-5. With the loss, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has now lost five in a row and 13 times in its last 18 games.
The game was called in the bottom of the ninth with two outs after the RailRiders had scored two runs to cut into an 8-3 deficit and had the potential tying run on deck. According to official Major League rules, the RailRiders didn&#8217;t have to finish their at-bats in the inning because Durham didn&#8217;t take the lead in the top of the inning.
The runs in the ninth for SWB came a little too late. Melky Mesa tripled to lead off the frame. Alberto Gonzalez followed with an RBI-double. After Bobby Wilson and Corban Joseph were retired, Brennan Boesch (3-for-5) drove in Gonzalez with a double to trim the lead to 8-5. After that, the umpires called for the tarp as the conditions became unplayable.
&#8220;It&#8217;s tough, but it started to come down pretty hard. I think we could&#8217;ve got through a couple more hitters but Mother Nature didn&#8217;t allow it and the umpires felt like it wasn&#8217;t good conditions,&#8221; RailRiders outfielder Thomas Neal said. &#8220;You really can&#8217;t fault them for having the player&#8217;s best interest even though we might have won if we kept playing&#8230;It&#8217;s part of the game and it happens and you move forward.&#8221;
Stepping on the mound for the first time since allowing five runs in a relief outing for New York on May 15, RailRiders pitcher Brett Marshall was hoping to show Yankees&#8217; brass that he&#8217;s a better producer than that.
Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, he ran into a hot-hitting Durham squad and allowed a season-high eight runs in just four innings being hit with his third loss of the season.
The barrage of runs for Durham off Marshall started in the top of the first. Montrose grad Rich Thompson started the frame with an infield single. Two batters later, Vince Belnome crushed a flyball to the gap in left-center that centerfielder Melky Mesa had to play off a bounce. Two runs scored on the triple for a 2-0 lead. After Marshall got the next two outs, former SWB Yankee slugging fan favorite Shelley Duncan crushed a two-run home run over the billboards in left field for a 4-0 Durham lead. It was just the first longball of the season for Duncan, who started the campaign playing in 20 games for Tampa Bay.
After Marshall settled down a bit keeping the Bulls scoreless in the second and third, they were back at it again in the top of the fourth putting up four more runs highlighted by a monster three-run home run from Wil Myers.
Marshall was taken out of his routine, which would be pitching every five days by having eight days of rest before Thursday.
&#8220;It&#8217;s always different because you&#8217;d like to be on the same schedule but it&#8217;s baseball it&#8217;s going to happen so I really can&#8217;t make too many excuses about it,&#8221; said Marshall, who made his first appearance for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since May 7. Although he only walked two, of the 22 batters he faced, he fell behind 16 of them, including 14 of them with a first-pitch ball. He gave up eight hits, but two of them were huge in the two homers.
&#8220;I felt good. I thought I pitched good, just left some pitches up and they got hit pretty hard.&#8221;
Those eight runs are all the Bulls scored on the night as relievers Kelvin Perez (three innings) and Josh Spence (two) pitched the rest of the game without allowing a run. That helped the RailRiders start to chip away, but it the deficit proved to be too large to overcome.
