Cartwright: Pennsylvanians can track their $1,400 payment status

NEWPORT TWP. — Firefighters pulled a teenage girl from her burning home early Thursday morning after neighbors tried to reach her second-floor bedroom with a ladder.

The girl, whose name has not been released, was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown for treatment of her injuries.

The fast moving fire at the the double-block house at 58 N. Market St. was reported at 6:30 a.m.

Next door neighbor Dan Accurso said a 9-year-old boy who lives in the house alerted him to the fire. Accurso said he saw flames shooting from a side window on the first floor.

By then other neighbors came out and tried to help with what was available.

“The neighbor in the back house had a garden hose trying to put out the fire,” Accurso said.

Before firefighters from Newport Township and Nanticoke arrived someone put up a ladder to the second floor, but was unable to get to the girl because of the smoke and flames, Accurso said.

Another attempt was made to enter through the back door, but Accurso said he couldn’t due to the intensity of the fire and smoke.

A neighbor with a walking stick gave it to Accurso who said he used it to break a window on the first-floor of the other side of the house where another family lived.

“It just happened to be what he had,” Accurso said. “I held the window open. He helped lift the people out.”

A mother and her two children climbed through the window, Accurso said.

Fire officials said they were notified en route of one person still in the burning house. They arrived and put up ladders to get to the girl’s bedroom and remove her, they said.

The girl was taken to a local hospital and then on to Allentown.

The fire was contained to the side of the house where the girl lived with her family, but the other side sustained smoke and water damage. A total of six people were displaced and were receiving emergency housing assistance from the Red Cross.

A state police fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause.

Fire officials said none of the firefighters who responded were injured.

Hanover Township and Mocanaqua fire departments, Slocum Emergency Medical Services, Newport Township Police and area medical units assisted.
