ON NOV. 14, IT WAS announced in the preliminary Diocesan Strategic Plan that next year the four Catholic high schools in Luzerne County may  close and merge into one. This announcement came as a blow to the students and faculty of Bishop O&rsquo;Reilly Junior/Senior High School, for it meant that next year O&rsquo;Reilly may  be no more. 
Every day since then, students have come to school wondering what will happen next year: what school they will attend, where their friends will go, who their teachers and athletic coaches will be. Still, despite all the uncertainty, life at O&rsquo;Reilly goes on as it always has.
For example, before Christmas, the students of O&rsquo;Reilly remembered those who are in need. Throughout December, the Student Council sponsored a Toys for Tots drive, and the Service Club held a holiday food drive to benefit the Christian Service Center in Plymouth. In addition, O&rsquo;Reilly has recently held a series of mission collections to benefit those in the O&rsquo;Reilly community who are in need of financial aid.
The O&rsquo;Reilly community recently welcomed Mrs. Alexandra Van Derlyke to the faculty. She will teach chemistry and environmental science.
Before Christmas, the juniors were scheduled to receive their class rings in a ceremony held in front of their parents and the O&rsquo;Reilly students and faculty. 
The highlight of December for most students was the annual Winter Semi-Formal dance, held this year on Dec. 15. Since Dec. 22, students have been on Christmas break and are enjoying the much-needed break from classes and activities, and will hopefully be refreshed and rejuvenated for the new year.
