Moulton, Martino take Winter’s End Run honors

Anthony Goulstone finished 12th in the state in the 200-yard individual medley to lead District 2 swimmers Saturday when the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships concluded at Conestoga Valley with the Class 3A competition.

After a big day for District 2 Friday on the Class 2A level, none of the District 2 entries was able to finish higher than Goulstone among the 16 entries in each event.

Hazleton Area qualified all three relay teams and individuals in six of seven events with District 2 titles, allowing the Cougars to score in all those events and finished tied for 29th in the state out of 56 boys teams that sent swimmers to Cumberland Valley.

Goulstone finished the 200 IM in 1:54.60. He was also 14th in the 100 backstroke in 53.72 seconds, along with leading off the 200 medley relay and anchoring the 15th-place 200 freestyle relay.

Antonio Daiute was 15th in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.81.

The Cougars were 15th in both freestyle relays and last in the medley relay.

Daiute was on both freestyle relay teams.

Logan Yakubowski, Ryan Kovalick and Thomas Pollock were also on two relay teams while Liam Leonard and Cole Johnson were on one each.

Pollock (50 free and 100 free), Yakubowski (100 fly) and Kovalick (500 free) were each 16th in their events.

Lackawanna League member Delaware Valley represented District 2 in seven of 10 girls events and was unable to finish higher than 13th.

Tunkhannock’s Camryn Rogers was 15th in the 50 freestyle and 16th in the 100 freestyle while teammate Samantha Roerig was 16th in the 100 breaststroke.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Misericordia sweeps Wilkes

The Misericordia University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Wilkes on Sunday at Tambur Field. The Cougars won 13-2, 7-3, to take three-out-of-four in the weekend series.

Shane Hughes had two hits and Santino Manganella, Dante Salerno and Derrick Vosburg all drove in two runs in the opener.

Brendan Gray tossed five shutout innings to earn the win.

Austin Miles had two hits in the nightcap and Tyler Leonard earned the win with 4.1 innings of no-hit relief.

Nick Pronti had two hits and two RBI for Wilkes.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

MU splits at FDU-Florham

The Misericordia University softball team split a doubleheader at FDU-Florham, Sunday, to take the weekend series.

The Cougars dropped the opener, 3-2, but took the nightcap, 9-6.

Nicole Elliott had two of MU’s six hits in the opener and Zariah Alvin had a double.

Emily Wenner absorbed the loss while Alexa McHugh struck out five in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Maddie Holub had three hits, including two doubles, and three runs in the nightcap and Brianna Holder had two hits and three RBI.

Kaitlin Redling and Antonia Pacillo added two hits and Elliott drove in two runs.

McHugh struck out four over four innings to earn the win.

Lieback leads Monarchs to sweep

Senior Mindina Lieback combined to go 7-for-9 in the doubleheader as she led the King’s College softball team to the doubleheader sweep, 10-2 in game one and 10-1 in five innings in game two, over the host DeSales University.

The Monarchs improve to 4-4 on the season and in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play with the wins.

The Monarchs are off for the week before their home-and-home series with local rival Wilkes as they are set to travel across town on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start time.

King’s hosts the Colonels on Sunday also with a 1 p.m. start time at Betzler Athletic Complex.
