Wilkes-Barre man pleads guilty to trying to meet child for sex

WILKES-BARRE — The stone wall channeling Laurel Run along Kresge Street appears to be unaffected by a small settlement of the ground, a city official said Tuesday.

A contractor on Monday dumped stones into the section where the ground pulled away from the wall, said Butch Frati, Wilkes-Barre Deputy City Administrator and Director of Operations.

“It doesn’t look like anything with the wall,” Frati said.

Concrete barriers remained in place in the roadway between Trethaway and Govier streets in the Parsons section of the city.

The contractor made some test holes and took soil samples and Frati said he is awaiting the test results. He did not have the cost of the work.

The settling of the ground might have occurred in the past week, Frati said. The city decided to err on the side of caution in having the work done, he added.

“It’s something at the time we considered an emergency,” Frati said.

The stone wall, constructed by the Works Progress Administration created in the 1930s as a New Deal program of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was similar to the one that collapsed into Solomon Creek in December 2016.

Nearly four years later, the city marked the completion of an estimated $5.2 million project to build a new reinforced concrete wall between South Franklin and Vulcan streets and construction of a pump station. The city used more than $4 million from a bond issue and disaster recovery money from the state to fund the Solomon Creek project.
