First Posted: 6/18/2013 WILKES-BARRE &#8211; A man charged with assaulting and threatening his ex-girlfriend in December pleaded guilty Tuesday to related charges and was sentenced to nearly two years in prison.
Jose Figueroa Santiago, 31, with no last known address, entered the plea to charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.
County Judge Lesa Gelb sentenced him to one year minus a day to two years minus two days in county prison, a sentence agreed upon by Santiago&#8217;s attorneys and the county District Attorney&#8217;s Office.
According to court papers:
On Dec. 22, police were dispatched to a South Main Street, Pittston, home to investigate a report of a woman being assaulted. Christina Jennings, 27, told police she awoke around 3 a.m. to find Santiago, her ex-boyfriend, standing over her demanding her cellphone.
Jennings refused to give Santiago the phone&#8217;s password, according to court papers, and he punched her repeatedly in the face. Jennings said Santiago then choked her, causing her to pass out.
Court papers say Jennings dialed 911 before she was dragged into the bathroom, where Santiago allegedly held a knife to her, telling her if she told anyone about what just occurred he would kill her and her family.
Santiago then made a phone call, saying that if he goes to jail &#8220;everyone has to be killed,&#8221; according to the criminal complaint.
Santiago and Jennings have a troubled past. Most recently in 2010 Santiago was charged with stabbing another man and police charged Jennings and her mother with hiding Santiago.
According to court records, Santiago was charged with stabbing Shane Totten multiple times in Pittston. Totten was treated at a local hospital for his injuries.
Police went to Jennings&#8217; residence, and both women said Santiago was not there. Police searched the home and found Santiago in a bathroom.
Jennings was charged with hindering apprehension, but those charges were later dismissed by a district judge.
Santiago was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and possession of an instrument of crime in relation to Totten&#8217;s stabbing. He pleaded guilty to possession of instruments of crime and simple assault in April 2011.
He was sentenced two months later to three to six months in county prison as well as one year probation.
