China frees maker of film about labor camp abuse

First Posted: 7/27/2013 CAIRO &#8212; Scores of people were killed and dozens more wounded Saturday in the worst violence in recent Egyptian history as police opened fire on supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi.
The number of dead was impossible to confirm immediately as both Morsi supporters and the government offered widely different accounts. The Muslim Brotherhood, the secret organization through which Morsi ascended to the presidency, claimed as many as 200 dead, while the Ministry of Interior announced implausibly that police never fired a live round at the protesters, despite all evidence to the contrary. Health ministry officials put the death toll at 38 and another 200 injured.
But just a brief visit to a field hospital treating casualties showed those numbers were far too conservative. A McClatchy reporter at the hospital counted 27 dead and as she left, three more bodies arrived, adding to a frantic and horrific scene. At least three of the dead had been shot in the head.
Over and over, hospital workers would move a body to the ground and search the pockets for an identification card. When they found one, they wrote the name on an arm. 
Two other hospitals were also treating the wounded.
Doctors said the injuries could only have come from professional marksmen. Ebtesan Zain, a gynecologist, said she came to help her fellow doctors only to discover she was not needed &#8212; everyone she encountered was dead.
The latest clashes were spurred by a call by Egypt&#8217;s current strongman, Gen. Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, for Egyptians to rally in support of the military Friday so they would have the &#8220;mandate&#8221; needed to combat &#8220;violence and terrorism,&#8221; which government officials have obliquely equated with Morsi supporters.
Millions heeded el-Sissi&#8217;s call in celebratory rallies, carrying el-Sissi&#8217;s picture. Late Friday, the military issued a statement, thanking demonstrators for their support.
The violence came just a few hours later, in the middle of the night and continuing for hours, when many in Cairo were already expecting the military to attempt to clear pro-Morsi demonstrators from a sit-in they&#8217;ve been holding in the Rabaa district since June 28.
Just how the violence began is uncertain. The official version from the minister of the interior, Mohammed Ibrahim, who oversees the country&#8217;s security services, said pro-Morsi protesters were headed toward pro military supporters and that the military simply wanted to stop them from the 6th of October bridge, a key thoroughfare near Cairo&#8217;s iconic Tahrir Square. The official account said security forces fired tear gas to deter the pro-Morsi crowd and that 14 policemen were injured when the demonstrators retaliated.
Morsi supporters rejected that account.
