Geffen Hall rebuild speeded due to virus, reopen in fall '22

HANOVER TWP. &mdash; Citing a COVID-19 &ldquo;outbreak,&rdquo; Hanover Area School District Superintendent Nathan Barrett announced in-person classes will be suspended and students will return to remote-only learning April 7, 8, and 9.
				&ldquo;We will continue to monitor the situation and should the need arise to remain on a virtual platform past April 9, 2021, you will be notified by the end of the week,&rdquo; Barrett wrote in a letter to parents and guardians of district students, posted Monday.
				&ldquo;Through contact tracing we are in the process of identifying and notifying students who have been in close contact with a positive case.
				&ldquo;As always, the health and safety of the students and staff of the Hanover Area School District is my top priority. We ask that you continue to wear a mask when out in public, maintain social distancing, monitor your student for any symptoms related to the COVID-19 virus and report them to the school nurse,&rdquo; the letter said.
				The notice came less than two hours after the district sent a text message announcing that vaccinations were available at the High School Monday, though in a limited supply. The text urged people to &ldquo;assist elderly in getting vaccinated,&rdquo; but that otherwise anyone 16 or older was eligible. The clinic was a walk-in, with &ldquo;no need to call or register.&rdquo;
				That was in sharp contrast to a vaccination clinic arranged at the high school through Walmart several weeks ago, which garnered some criticism because all the available shots had been booked before it opened.
				The State Department of Health explained those vaccinations were arranged through a federal program designed to vaccinate elderly residents, and that Walmart had worked with the state Department of Aging to arrange appointments for shots.
				Luzerne County is in the midst of a surge of the virus, with the state reporting more than 100 new cases on 8 of the last 13 days. Saturday&rsquo;s report of 158 cases was the highest single-day total since Jan. 30.
				The ZIP code for the Hanover Area Junior/Senior High School, 18706, has also seen an increase. The last week of February, that code reported 13 new cases. For the three weeks after that, it reported 22, 22 and 27 new cases respectively. For the week of March 26 to last Friday, the 18706 code reported 33 new cases.
				Over the three days since then &mdash; Saturday, Sunday and Monday &mdash; the code reported a total of 50 new cases.
