Judge refuses to dismiss charges in Sherman Hills shootings

<p>SHAVERTOWN &#8212; The Back Mountain Chamber was formed in 2012 with the goal of promoting commerce, community and culture as a means of improving the quality of life for Back Mountain residents. The Chamber, which brings together volunteers from the small business, higher education and local government sectors, holds a number of events throughout the year in service of their three tenets. This year&#8217;s Back Mountain Chamber cultural event is honoring musician, concert promoter and record store owner Joe Nardone Sr.</p><p>&#8220;We wanted to honor somebody that has continually brought culture to the Back Mountain and the first person we thought about is Joe Nardone,&#8221; said event co-chair Cynthia Post. &#8220;He has provided entertainment with the store, his bands and bringing musicians into town at places like The Kirby. We wanted to take the time to stop and say thanks.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Last year we had a jazz event and honored Back Mountain local Bobby Baird, who was one of the premiere jazz trumpeters throughout the &#8217;50s and the &#8217;60s,&#8221; Chamber President Jim Reino added. &#8220;We try to pick out a person who has enhanced the cultural activity in the area.&#8221;</p><p>Nardone began playing music in high school with a band called The Four Stars and formed The All-Stars after his school career ended. Around that time he opened his first record store in downtown Wilkes-Barre that moved to Wyoming Valley Mall in 1972 and stayed there for 30 years before opening the present-day Gallery of Sound location on Mundy Street. Nardone&#8217;s record store gave him a read on which new artists were beginning to gain popularity and he used that knowledge to book up-and-coming acts like Neil Diamond, Queen, Kiss and Billy Joel in the Wilkes-Barre area.</p><p>All of Nardone&#8217;s musical endeavors played off each other to give the musician/store owner/promoter the advantage in an unpredictable business.</p><p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t get bored in this business,&#8221; Nardone said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a very exciting and, a lot of times, very scary business. You can win or you can lose. You just throw your dice. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.&#8221;</p><p>Nardone can still be found at the record store, still plays with the All-Stars (they hold a yearly reunion at Irem Temple Country Club in Dallas) and still books concerts. On Nov. 21 he&#8217;s bringing a night of doo wop to the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts. On Oct. 2, Nardone will take a break from his endeavors to attend the Back Mountain Chamber&#8217;s Beatles-themed cultural event, Back to Beatles.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a great honor because there are so many wonderful people in the Back Mountain that have done a lot a lot of things, but it&#8217;s an honor to be recognized for being with music all my life,&#8221; Nardone said. &#8220;I&#8217;m a very lucky guy and it&#8217;s really an honor that I&#8217;ve been chosen.&#8221;</p><p>Nardone&#8217;s son, Joe Nardone Jr., helped the Chamber book sought-after New York Beatles tribute band Beatles Faux Sale for the event, which will be held at Huntsville Golf Club in Shavertown. The event, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will feature two sets from the band, a Beatles-inspired photo booth, an open beer and wine bar, food booths featuring Back Mountain businesses and a dance floor. Tickets for the evening are $75 and can be purchased at backmountainchamber.org or (570) 275-9380.</p><p>The dress code is casual according to Post and Reino, but those who attend are encouraged to wear period dress and bring something warm since the event will be under a tent. The dance floor may be all the insulation some attendees need&#8212;there will be plenty of time to relive the days of the mop top with two sets of Beatles songs permeating a &#8217;60s-inspired motif, and it&#8217;s all to honor a man integral to bringing rock &#8216;n roll to Northeastern Pennsylvania.</p><style>
