Forty Fort writer urges opposition to tax hike
Forty Fort Borough Council is proposing a ridiculous increase in our taxes.
Please plan on attending the next meeting, at 7:15 p.m. Monday in the borough building.
Silence indicates acceptance, so please be there. We need a sizeable crowd to show our displeasure. Can we count on you?
County&rsquo;s tax debt can bring profit elsewhere
I read with interest Mark Guydish&rsquo;s column in The Times Leader&rsquo;s Dec. 12 edition, in which he writes about Luzerne County&rsquo;s debt. 
While Mr. Guydish&rsquo;s explanation was knowledgeable and lucid, he outlined only one half of the equation. 
The other half is that a debt immediately creates an asset. In other words, one man&rsquo;s debt is another man&rsquo;s asset. To quote a song, &ldquo;you can&rsquo;t have one without the other.&rdquo; 
So, Luzerne County&rsquo;s debt is someone else&rsquo;s asset.
I would urge all our local banks, pension funds and others to purchase Luzerne County debt, because in so doing you own a tax-free asset.
&lsquo;Part-time Catholics&rsquo; disrespectful to church
The latest statistics reveal only 20 percent of Catholics attend Mass. What about the disrespect shown by Catholics who arrive late for Mass and those who on a regular basis leave before the Mass is completed?
Having made personal surveys of churches within the Scranton Diocese in the last few months, I have witnessed a shameful display of Catholics leaving Mass before Communion, during Communion and immediately following Communion. 
The questions to ask: &ldquo;Why?&rdquo; and &ldquo;What&rsquo;s the hurry?&rdquo;
Catholics are expected to attend Mass from the opening prayers until the final blessing by the priest. Anything less is not acceptable without a valid reason.
We&rsquo;ve heard the often-used description &ldquo;cafeteria Catholics&rdquo; for those who pick and choose; a more appropriate description here would be &ldquo;part-time Catholics.&rdquo; They attend only part of the Mass.
Stand outside the average Catholic church 10 minutes before the end of Mass and watch the &ldquo;part-timers&rdquo; leave all exits. It looks like people fleeing a burning building.
In all likelihood, there&rsquo;s no fire; but you can be sure it won&rsquo;t be a false alarm in hell, and dialing 911 won&rsquo;t help.
County should have sold, not scrapped, guns
I cannot believe that, in these rough economic times, the Luzerne County District Attorney&rsquo;s Office would literally destroy a viable source of revenue (&ldquo;Unwanted county guns scrapped,&rdquo; Dec. 10).
The &ldquo;unwanted&rdquo; guns, assuming they were functional, could have brought in revenue for the county if they had been transferred to a licensed gun dealer and sold to the law-abiding public. What an absolute waste.
