Penn State fundraiser nets $10.6M despite negative publicity from scandal.


UNIVERSITY PARK -- Despite economic malaise and a mountain of negative publicity about their university in the past three months, Penn State students raised $10.6 million-plus to support families of children with pediatric cancer.
The record amount, $10,686,924.83, for the Four Diamonds Fund, was unveiled at 4 p.m. Sunday at the end of the IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. The amount bested the then-record $9.5 million raised last year.
Perhaps the highlight of the 46 straight hours of music, entertainment and camaraderie of Thon was an appearance by Jay Paterno at noon Sunday. He told the crowd of more than 15,000 that students here should be known for their leadership in pulling off Thon and not the events surrounding the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal, &ldquo;which they had nothing to do with,&rdquo; he said.
Donning a blue Thon hooded sweatshirt, Paterno told more than 15,000 people that Penn State students should be known for raising millions of dollars to support cancer research. &ldquo;If you live to be 100 years old, what you&rsquo;ve done here for the past two days, weeks, months, all this time you&rsquo;ve put into this, what you&rsquo;ve done here will echo in eternity. You represent the best of our alma mater,&rdquo; Paterno said.
He said he kept a Thon mug placed at the make-shift memorial at the Joe Paterno statue outside Beaver Stadium. &ldquo;That mug sits on my desk every day,&rdquo; he said, reminding him of what Penn State and Thon is about.
After the death of Joe Paterno last month, the Paterno family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State&rsquo;s Hershey Children&rsquo;s Hospital, which administers the money Thon raises.
