Letter to the Editor: Today’s students go lightly on homework, and it shows in low achievement

Outdoors with Tom Venesky: Winter’s impact still felt on many area ponds

What more proof of the Democratic failure do we need than Baltimore?There have been 35 homicides in Baltimore since the Freddie Gray riots, totaling 98 homicides so far this year. They blame the police for this black-on-black crime and say they are not policing enough. They say that all these hog-tied public servants do is answer 911 calls. They say &#8220;change&#8221; is needed.Does any of this entitlement-endowed group ever realize that &#8220;change&#8221; must come from within?I realize that generations of being on welfare takes away any incentive to work or to change. I don&#8217;t blame these people. I blame the social engineers who structured this mess, starting with the Johnson administration up to the present administration.These are people who need help with just the basics of life. They don&#8217;t know that children shouldn&#8217;t have children. They don&#8217;t know that one father is better for a family then several; they don&#8217;t know that mothers should be able to identify the father of their child and make him responsible. They know nothing of homemaking, of cooking, cleaning, tutoring their child. They are too busy with getting on to the next pregnancy and finding the means to support it without any education or job skills.The men don&#8217;t know that they should be a part of their child&#8217;s life; if they know they have a child. The children of these unions have been damned to a one-dimensional life without complete families, without working role models and left to their own devices to figure out how to sustain them. Who should be surprised that they turn to selling drugs, petty theft and robbery?They let you, me and the government do the parenting, and it&#8217;s been a disaster financially for us, including them, and a repeated disaster generationally for their children. Without family support, the additional $68 million that activists are asking Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan for education is just money thrown at a wall.What is the difference between a city like Baltimore and the people who have come to populate Hazleton, besides the fact that Baltimore is a much larger city? Hazleton has had its problems, and many of us resented the influx of inhabitants from Mexico. But in this area, and throughout the country, they are not of the entitlement mindset.Thankfully they were not part of the engineering of the &#8217;60s. They work hard, start small businesses and are determined to succeed. They, along with blacks and other hard-working minorities, will help us set our country on the right path.Hillary Clinton, running for president, falls in step with the giveaways and the status quo of the Democratic Party.Those of us who do not benefit from these spectacular giveaways &#8211; the working taxpayers &#8211; need to be diligent. We are shrinking, and many think we are irrelevant because they don&#8217;t realize they can&#8217;t get along without us; but we are the only line of defense.Deanna Innamorati FarrellWest Wyoming
