Dear editor:Nearly 45 years ago, a group of individuals and clergy from area churches noticed there were many elderly and homebound who were not able to prepare meals for themselves. In an effort to ensure that these residents receive a balanced and nutritious meal on a daily basis, they agreed to form a local Meals on Wheels chapter. It was decided that a hot lunch and light supper would be provided to those in need.Each week day, the kitchen staff gathers around 7 a.m. at the Odd Fellows Building in Pittston to prepare hot meals, make sandwiches and serve up containers of fruits and desserts. We add little treats that bring a smile to the recipients&#8217; faces.A team of volunteers, consisting of a driver and a runner, pack the food in containers and deliver the meals. In some instances, the Meals on Wheels volunteers are the only visitors these residents receive on a daily basis.Over 31,000 meals are served each year to needy residents of Avoca, Dupont, Duryea, Hughestown, Jenkins Township, Laflin, Pittston, Pittston Township, Plains Township, West Pittston, West Wyoming and Yatesville. Currently, Meals on Wheels of Greater Pittston serves 60-plus individuals and the need continues to grow.It takes individuals, working together as caring members of the community, to make an organization like Meals on Wheels of Greater Pittston work. It&#8217;s been that way since 1969. But, in order for the organization to survive, let alone grow, it needs your help. Supported by the community, Meals on Wheels receives no state aid.Help us reach our financial commitments by making a financial pledge now that may be carried over three tax years or more.Any amount will ensure that Meals on Wheels remains able to serve the needs of the homebound and elderly of our community.
