- Note on hummingbirds: Be on the lookout for western hummingbirds, such as the adult male rufous. Some have already shown up on the wintering grounds in the Gulf, and there have been migrant reports in neighboring states like Ohio. It&#8217;s suspected that most years the adult males are overlooked in the crush of late-summer rubythroats, because unfortunately most people who maintain hummingbird feeders don&#8217;t recognize the importance of seeing a bright orange hummer at their feeders.
