Abington Heights junior high softball team wins three games

Centennial celebration planned for Nicholson Bridge Sept. 11-13

The Abington Heights junior high softball team swept a doubleheader from Nanticoke on April 18.In the first game, the Lady Comets scored five runs in the last inning to win, 7-3. Alison Fiorillo knocked in two runs with a double and Caroline Kelly added a single to score two runs. Fiorillo and Kailey Rothenberger sparked the defense. Jane Mecca&#8217;s speed on the base baths plated a key run. Katya Williams tossed a three hitter and struck out five to pick up the win.In the second game, Mara Hamm had three hits, including a triple, to spark the offense. Kelly and Catherine Anne Kupinski had two hits apiece. Marina Castellano&#8217;s speed on the base paths led to two runs. Ashley Chrysler made a diving catch with the bases loaded to shut down a Lady Trojans rally. Kelly made a running catch in left field to spark the defense. Hamm picked up her first win of the year.The Lady Comets defeated Northeast Intermediate School, 13-0, April 17. Williams pitched a no-hitter and struck out 13 in five innings to pick up the win. Williams also led the offense with two hits, including a triple. Kupinski added a triple and knocked in four runs. Chrysler and Nina Kozar made key defensive plays.Abington Heights suffered its first defeat of the year, 5-4, to Wallenpaupack April 16. Maria Tully had three hits, including a double. Kozar had two hits, including a triple that knocked in two runs. Arla Davis doubled and chipped in with two hits. Mecca led the Lady Comets defense and Tully allowed six hits in the loss.
