Wyoming Area approves second reading of new tobacco use policy

EXETER &#8212; The Wyoming Area School Board approved the second reading of the revised Tobacco Use Policy to govern the entire Wyoming Area School District.The prior policy was much of the same. However, in this policy, the board voted to add the Pennsylvania statute on such offenses. Currently, the Pennsylvania statue states anyone who commits an offense is subject to prosecution initiated by the school district.If a student in the Wyoming Area School District is caught possessing or using tobacco on school property, which is any time in a school building, on a school bus and anywhere on school property, the offense is considered summary. The student then has the option to take a class or appear in court and face a possible fine.Tobacco, according to the policy, is defined as a lit or unlit cigarette, cigar or pipe; other lit smoking products; and smokeless tobacco in any form.Wyoming Area Principal Vito Quaglia said he believes smoking is not as big as a problem as it has been in the past. Most students elect to take the class to drop all charges, he said.The school district, although a tobacco free zone, does not the possession or use of tobacco by employees. This policy only pertains to students. However, the board reiterated that a policy may be in the works to adopt a new statute for employees who use tobacco.The Wyoming Area Police Department report, which appeared in the agenda on Tuesday, showed two instances in which the use of tobacco was sited in schools in the month of March.In other business:&#8226; Wyoming Area will post for a Cyber and Keystone Facilitator/Middle School math and science instructor.&#8226; The school approved the school calendar for the 2015-16 school year.The Wyoming Area School Board will meet next at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26.
