First Posted: 8/11/2014 WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Grab that umbrella and put on those rain boots &#8212; it&#8217;s going to be a rainy day Tuesday in the Wyoming Valley.
WNEP meteorologist Tom Clark said that there will be a &#8220;good, soaking rain&#8221; Tuesday and into Tuesday night. Clark said there is a 100 percent chance of rain.
&#8220;This will be one of our most impressive rainfall events of the summer,&#8221; said Clark adding he is expecting up to 3 inches will fall by Wednesday morning.
Clark said some thunder and lightning is possible tonight, but did not anticipate any severe weather. Clark said he does not anticipate any serious flooding concerns.
&#8220;I think the ground&#8217;s going to soak it up pretty good,&#8221; Clark said.
The rain will bring some much-needed relief in what has been an abnormally dry summer for the region. Clark said the Wyoming Valley is 4 inches below its normal summer rainfall amount &#8212; since June 1, the Wyoming Valley has gotten 5 inches of rain.
Despite the region&#8217;s dryness, it&#8217;s not as bad as it could be.
&#8220;We&#8217;re not at drought status at this point,&#8221; Clark said.
Clark explained that meteorologists gauge the dryness by digging into the ground to measure moisture, measuring the water levels of lakes and streams and examining the changes of leaves in the trees.
Clark said that &#8220;it&#8217;s like powder in many spots,&#8221; with soil being dry as deep as 5 feet into the earth. As a result, Clark said several lawns have gone dormant, and the dry spell has meant more work for farmers and gardeners.
The rain, Clark said, will be &#8220;just what the doctor ordered.&#8221;
