LEHMAN TWP. &#8211; The emergence of the Back Mountain Youth Lacrosse Organization helped spur the recent growth of the sport on the high school level locally.Now, the high school game&#8217;s expansion may in turn be helping to spark additional interest on the youth level.With more teams than ever before playing during what is now the third season of the Wyoming Valley Conference high school lacrosse, the number of youth teams and players is growing as well.The BMYL will once again host the largest youth lacrosse tournament in northeastern Pennsylvania May 9. The Brawl, as the tournament is known, has reached its current max of 48 teams.Those teams will fill five fields at a time at the Outlet Fields in Lehman, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until around 5 p.m. when five champions have been determined.&#8220;This is our biggest tournament ever,&#8221; BYML board member and secretary Mickey Button said. &#8220;Hopefully, we&#8217;re looking to be able to expand that in the years ahead.&#8221;The tournament has grown each of its five years and is up from 39 teams a year ago.Button said teams come from Tunkhannock, Scranton, Mountain Top, Delaware Valley, Lehigh Valley, New Jersey and New York State.There will be titles on the U15, U13 and U11 levels for boys and the seventh/eighth and fifth/sixth grade divisions for girls. The Back Mountain Bandits, the BMYL teams, will compete in each division.Vendors will be set up throughout the day, including those with lacrosse equipment and supplies.The Brawl serves as the only fundraiser of the year for the BMYL.The BMYL draws players from the Dallas and Lake-Lehman School Districts and beyond.&#8220;Any kids that want to play are welcome,&#8221; Button said. &#8220;We have players from Tunkhannock, Pittston, Nanticoke.&#8220;Our teams encompass a lot of different areas.&#8221;The BMYL has also tried to help other new clubs in other areas, such as Tunkhannock, get started.
