First Posted: 4/8/2014 WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Luzerne County Coroner&#8217;s Office Tuesday morning identified Charles Edmonds, 27, who died from apparent stab wounds he suffered during a fight inside an apartment building on South Hancock Street Monday night.
An autopsy is scheduled later today at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Edmonds died at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.
Police said Tuesday morning they charged Al-Tariq Peterkin, 31, with an open count of criminal homicide. He was jailed at the county correctional facility without bail.
Police responded to 330 S. Hancock St. just after 10 p.m. for a fight that involved a stabbing. Edmonds was found on the first floor at the bottom of stairs leading to the second floor.
According to a search warrant affidavit, witnesses told police Edmonds, known as &#8220;Vic,&#8221; and Peterkin, known as &#8220;Rique,&#8221; were involved in an argument and a tussle in a second floor apartment. Peterkin resided with two women in a first floor apartment.
The argument broke up and Peterkin returned to his apartment. A period of time later, Peterkin called Edmonds down to the first floor.
People in Edmonds&#8217; apartment urged him not to go but Edmonds went down the stairs to confront Peterkin, the search warrant affidavit says.
A short time later, Edmonds returned to his second floor apartment with blood on his hands and shirt. Edmonds told people in his apartment, &#8220;He stabbed me. The (racial slur) stabbed me,&#8221; before he fell back down the stairs.
Police attempted to make contact with people in the first floor apartment. Voices were heard behind the closed door but no one opened the door, the affidavit says.
Police obtained a search warrant at 1 a.m. to enter the first floor apartment where Peterkin was detained and eventually charged with criminal homicide.

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A city man was charged Tuesday morning in the fatal stabbing of a 27-year-old man at a South Hancock Street apartment Monday.
Al-Tariq Peterkin, 31, was arraigned on an open count of criminal homicide. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility without bail.
City police said they investigated a fight at 330 S. Hancock St. and found one man just after 10 p.m.
The victim was in some type of altercation with neighbors in a first floor apartment occupied by Peterkin and two women, police said.
Police said the victim returned to the second floor with stab wounds to his torso. He was transported to a hospital where he died, police said.
The name of the man who died has not been released. Police said an autopsy is scheduled for later today.

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; At least one person was taken to a hospital and several others were taken away in police cars after a reported stabbing Monday night at a South Hancock Street apartment house.
Police were dispatched to 330 S. Hancock St. at 10:09 p.m. for a report of two people fighting and one of them being stabbed, according to Luzerne County 911.
Neighbors gathered outside the three-story structure said they saw two stretchers carried from the apartment house and loaded into an ambulance.
A group of about five or six people accompanied police from around the back of the house at about 10:45 p.m. and shortly thereafter taken away in police cars.
One of the neighbors, Jo Ann Morgans, described the house as a trouble spot in the neighborhood to which police have responded on several occasions, at least two of which involved reported gunfire.
Morgans said she heard five gunshots shots come from the house about two weeks ago. She said suspicious activity has been occurring there, including numerous incidents of visitors stopping in and leaving a few minutes later &#8212; an activity police say is indicative of drug sales.
Police on scene could provide no information Monday night and attempts to reach the watch commander were unsuccessful.

Man charged in fatal stabbing in Wilkes-Barre
