First Posted: 4/23/2014 Peter Shaver, a senior at Dallas High School, recently placed at the regional History Day competition held at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Lehman Township. Shaver received the award in the individual historical paper senior division for his essay &#8220;Questions of Rights and Responsibilities in the Opposition to the Mexican-American War and Mid-1800s Expansionism.&#8221; He will advance to the Pennsylvania state competition in May at Millersville University. Shaver has been competing in the individual historical paper division of the History Day competition since sixth grade. He has won at the regional competition and has advanced to the state competition every year for the last seven years.
Hunter Watson, a senior at Greater Nanticoke Area High School, has been selected to become a member of The National Society of High School Scholars. The society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment. Membership in the society entitles qualified students to enjoy a variety of benefits. Watson is a graduate of Junior Leadership, Diversity Consortium and served as the school mascot. She also lettered in volleyball and softball. She will attend Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla., where she will major in event and hospitality management.
