First Posted: 3/5/2014 JUPITER, Fla. &#8212; Shelby Miller finally got a chance to pitch against the Boston Red Sox.
The St. Louis Cardinals right-hander gave up a leadoff home run in his spring training debut Wednesday, then retired eight in a row to help beat Boston 8-6. The game was a relaxed rematch of last year&#8217;s World Series, won by the Red Sox.
Miller, who was held of the World Series because the Cardinals didn&#8217;t want to add to the rookie&#8217;s season-long workload &#8212; a decision made easier because of Michael Wacha&#8217;s rise, gave up a homer to Daniel Nava on his second pitch. That was the lone baserunner allowed by Miller, who struck out five, four looking, and reached 95 mph on the radar gun.
&#8220;Physically I felt amazing out there,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s still early and we&#8217;ve got to build up, but I felt like the fastball was coming out of my hand really good.&#8221;
Boston newcomer Chris Capuano, pitching his first game, went two innings and allowed two runs on a homer by Xavier Scruggs. Xander Bogaerts homered for the Red Sox.
Phillies 2, Braves 2
CLEARWATER, Fla. &#8212; Brandon Beachy pitched three no-hit innings in his second start since having shoulder surgery in September and B.J. Upton doubled among his two hits for Atlanta in a tie with Philadelphia.
Beachy&#8217;s outing was a significant improvement over his first outing, when he gave up five hits and two runs in 1 2-3 innings against Houston.
Upton is trying to rebound from a horrid first season in Atlanta. He hit .184 in 126 games after signing for five years and $75 million.
Kevin Frandsen drove in Bobby Abreu in the fourth inning for the Phillies&#8217; first run. Frandsen was 2 for 3.
Sean O&#8217;Sullivan pitched three shutout innings despite giving up three hits and a walk. O&#8217;Sullivan is not expected to make the Phillies&#8217; opening-day roster.
Rays 5, Yankees 4
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. &#8212; Ben Zobrist, Desmond Jennings and Matt Joyce homered to help Tampa Bay beat New York.
Cesar Ramos allowed two runs in 2 1-3 innings as he entered the competition for the fifth spot in the Rays&#8217; pitching rotation. Newly acquired closer Grant Balfour gave up a pair of fourth-inning runs in his second spring appearance.
New York&#8217;s travel roster included few notable names after playing the previous night in Tampa, with Ichiro Suzuki getting a start in center field and Eduardo Nunez getting a look at second base as manager Joe Girardi continues to explores the infielder&#8217;s versatility.
Adam Warren, a candidate to be the Yankees&#8217; fifth starter, allowed one run and four hits in 2 1-3 innings.
Pirates 6, Blue Jays 4
DUNEDIN, Fla. &#8212; Brandon Morrow allowed five runs and six hits over three innings in Toronto&#8217;s loss to Pittsburgh.
Morrow was making his second appearance since a season-ending forearm injury last May. On Feb. 28, the right-hander gave up two hits and one run in two relief innings.
Travis Snider had a first-inning RBI single and a two-run homer in the third off Morrow.
Pittsburgh&#8217;s Jeff Locke was scratched from his start because of right side tightness. The Pirates believe the injury is a minor one.
Edwin Encarnacion had a two-run double for the Blue Jays.
Tigers 3, Astros 0
KISSIMMEE, Fla. &#8212; Max Scherzer struck out three in three impressive innings as Detroit beat Houston.
Scherzer allowed one hit and Ian Kinsler contributed an RBI single for the Tigers. Houston managed only three hits against six Detroit pitchers.
Scherzer, the AL Cy Young Award winner, has allowed one run in five innings during spring training. Detroit is set to send Justin Verlander, its other star right-hander, to the mound Thursday against a Philadelphia split squad, weather permitting. Verlander is coming back from offseason surgery and has not pitched in a game this spring.
Jose Altuve singled in the first inning for the only hit off Scherzer. Houston center fielder Dexter Fowler was scratched because of a stiff neck.
Marlins 5, Mets (ss) 2
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. &#8212; Jose Fernandez pitched 3 1-3 scoreless innings as Miami beat a New York split squad in 10 innings.
Fernandez allowed two hits, struck out two and walked none.
Eric Young Jr. hit a leadoff single in the Mets against Fernandez before the NL Rookie of the Year retired the next nine batters.
Mets starter Dillon Gee allowed one run and four hits in 2 1-3 innings. He gave up three straight hits to start the second, including an RBI double by Reed Johnson.
Marlins non-roster invitee Kevin Slowey was impressive in relief of Fernandez, allowing just one hit in 2 2-3 shutout innings. Mets reliever Jose Valverde threw one scoreless inning.
Nationals 11, Mets (ss) 5
VIERA, Fla. &#8212; Gio Gonzalez pitched one-hit ball for two innings in his spring training debut, Ian Desmond homered for the second straight day and Washington roughed up a New York split-squad.
Outfielder Brian Goodwin hit a two-run homer for Washington, and catcher Sandy Leon connected for a three-run shot and third baseman Matt Skole had a two-run drive in a seven-run eighth inning.
Zach Lutz had two hits including a solo homer in the ninth for the Mets, who also got a two-run single from shortstop Anthony Seratelli.
Padres 8, White Sox 0
GLENDALE, Ariz. &#8212; Nick Hundley hit a three-run homer off Chicago ace Chris Sale in the first inning in San Diego&#8217;s victory.
Sale gave up six runs on six hits and a walk in 2 2-3 innings.
Xavier Nady drove in the first Padres&#8217; run with a two-out single in the first. San Diego added single runs in the second and third.
Andrew Cashner pitched three shutout innings for the Padres. He gave up two hits and no walks, and struck out three.
Cody Decker, a non-roster catcher, homered for San Diego in the eighth off White Sox lefty David Purcey.
Rockies (ss) 8, Rangers 2
SURPRISE, Ariz. &#8212; Prince Fielder singled home fellow Texas newcomer Shin-Soo Choo, but Tommy Hanson gave up two runs on three consecutive extra-base hits in the first inning before settling down in the Rangers&#8217; loss to a Colorado split-squad.
Hanson, who is competing for a Texas rotation slot, struck out the next two batters. He pitched three innings, retiring the final five Rockies he faced.
Neal Cotts, who had a Rangers&#8217; record 1.11 ERA in 58 relief appearances last year, allowed six runs on four hits, two walks and a wild pitch, while retiring only two of batters.
Charlie Culberson, who went 3 for 4, homered in the first off Hanson. Corey Dickerson, the next batter, tripled and scored on Wilin Rosario&#8217;s double.
Giants 3, Angels 2
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. &#8212; Matt Cain pitched three shutout innings in his first start of the spring and Pablo Sandoval hit a pair of RBI singles as San Francisco defeated Los Angeles.
Cain will start the second game of the regular season at Arizona. He couldn&#8217;t throw in his first scheduled spring game on Saturday because of rain and instead threw 35 pitches in a covered bullpen session.
Cain gave up one hit, a second-inning double by Collin Cowgill, and struck out two.
Sandoval, slimmer after losing nearly 30 pounds during the offseason, collected his hits off Jered Weaver, who pitched four innings.
Royals 6, Diamondbacks 5
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. &#8212; Kansas City ace James Shields allowed one hit in three scoreless innings and Mike Moustakas hit a three-run homer in a victory over Arizona.
A.J. Pollock&#8217;s leadoff single in the third was the only hit Shields has allowed in four innings this spring. Shields struck out three with no walks.
Patrick Corbin, set to be Arizona&#8217;s opening-day starter against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Sydney, Australia, on March 22, gave up two runs on four hits in four innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Moustakas&#8217; deep shot to right off lefty Joe Paterson was his third homer of the spring. He had four RBIs in the game, giving him 10, most of any player in spring training.
Indians 8, Mariners 5
PEORIA, Ariz. &#8212; James Paxton allowed two hits in three scoreless innings and Nick Franklin drove in two runs in Seattle&#8217;s loss to Cleveland.
Cleveland starter Travis Banwart lasted just two-thirds of an inning and allowed four runs and three hits, including a leadoff homer by Abraham Almonte. Banwart left with the bases loaded, and Nick Hagadone walked Michael Saunders and gave up Franklin&#8217;s two-run single.
Pinch-hitter Francisco Lindor, a 20-year-old top prospect, hit a tiebreaking double off Danny Farquhar in a three-run ninth.
Ryan Raburn made it 5-all with a two-run homer in a four-run seventh against Lucas Luetge.
Seattle started position players who all could be on its opening-day roster. Robinson Cano singled and scored, and Kyle Seager doubled and scored.
Brewers 7, Athletics 2
PHOENIX &#8212; Ryan Braun hit his second homer of the spring and added a single to help Milwaukee beat Oakland.
Braun raised his batting average from .800 to .875 with the hits and now has seven hits in his first eight Cactus League at-bats. He has also walked twice, giving him a .900 on-base percentage.
Braun lined a single to right center in the first before taking an 0-2 change-up from Oakland starter Jarrod Parker down the left-field line. Parker allowed only two hits in 3 1/3 innings both to Braun. Both of Braun&#8217;s home runs this spring have come against the A&#8217;s.
Michael Taylor had a home run and a double, scoring both runs for the A&#8217;s. He now has five hits in the last two days.
Rockies (ss) 7, Cubs 5
MESA, Ariz. &#8212; Jeff Samardzija struggled with his command at times in a three-inning outing in a Colorado split-squad&#8217;s victory over Chicago.
The Cubs&#8217; possible opening-day starter gave up two straight singles then, after a sacrifice bunt, hit a batter and walked the next in a rocky two-run third inning. In three innings, he gave up three runs and four hits.
Rockies projected starter Tyler Chatwood gave up one unearned run in 2 2-3 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
The Rockies committed three errors behind Chatwood, who gave up only one hit.
Javier Baez, rated the No. 5 prospect by Baseball America, and George Kottaras connected for back-to-back homers in the sixth off the Rockies&#8217; Chris Martin.
