First Posted: 4/18/2014 MOOSIC &#8212; Alfredo Aceves tried to make the most of his first start as a RailRider this season. The right-hander did.
Unfortunately for Aceves, the IronPigs&#8217; Clete Thomas tried to make amends for an error in right field that led to the first run of the game. And he did as well.
Thomas had three hits, two RBI and scored a run after the miscue, including a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th leading Lehigh Valley to a 5-2 win over the RailRiders on Friday night at PNC Field in the first matchup of the 16-game IronRail Series between the two teams.
The IronPigs put up three runs in the top of the 11th against Yoshinori Tateyama and Thomas&#8217; hit capped the scoring. The go-ahead run scored on a suicide squeeze by late entry to the game, Tyler Henson to score Leandro Castro. Tyson Gillies added a sacrifice fly in the frame.
Aceves, who signed with the Yankees in late March after exercising an option with the Orioles, pitched five shutout innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The right-hander, who had been in the Yankees organization earlier in his career, got off to a mediocre start in the first inning when he had some strike zone issues, but still kept Lehigh Valley off the board. After that, he went on to whiff five and only give up three hits and one walk.
Aceves was in line for the win because the RailRiders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on weird defensive plays by the IronPigs that amounted for two errors on the same play.
On a flyball hit by Jose Pirela, Thomas couldn&#8217;t handle the ball, dropping it allowing Pirela to reach safely. On the relay throw, second baseman Troy Hanzawa had problems and Ramon Flores, who reached via walk with two outs, scored.
Thomas made up for the error in a way in the next half inning. He doubled to the left field corner to start the top of the sixth and scored when Reid Brignac doubled to right field with two outs to equal the score at 1-1.
Lehigh Valley got to Preston Claiborne in the top of the seventh when Thomas came through again. This time, it was a bases loaded single plating Steve Susdorf to give the IronPigs a 2-1 lead. LV missed more opportunities in the inning because Thomas&#8217; hit was with one out, but Hanzawa was out at the plate on the play before Jim Murphy struck out to end the inning.
Another run could have been helpful because a sacrifice fly by Russ Canzler in the bottom of the seventh gave the RailRiders their second run and tied the score at 2-2.
