Letter to the Editor: Good news from Wyoming Valley will inspire more good deeds

An April 8 letter to the editor about PennEast Pipeline advises readers that a study by Concentric Energy Advisors on PennEast that cites $900 million in energy savings to regional consumers is misleading.The writer seems to admit that natural gas prices are influenced by infrastructure constraints but misreads an industry report as to the localized impacts. As Concentric reports, and as is understood by major regional service companies that have acquired most of the PennEast capacity, natural gas prices are very high during periods of high demand because existing southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey infrastructure is constrained during those periods. PennEast will help alleviate these constraints and reduce energy costs to consumers.The writer then claims data was &#8220;cherry-picked&#8221; to favor PennEast. Actually, the reverse is true: 19 of the highest-demand days for the most recent winter available at the time the study was done were excluded to generate more conservative savings estimates.Additionally, the letter cites a footnote in an earlier Concentric study on behalf of Philadelphia City Council as proof that natural gas infrastructure is not needed. In reality, Concentric advises increasing Philadelphia&#8217;s reliance on natural gas from nearby Marcellus Shale to reduce energy costs and concludes that a new pipeline would benefit Philadelphia.Millions of homes and businesses in our region rely on natural gas for heating and other uses, and on electricity generated by natural gas.
