The final class has likely graduated from my high school. And, while losing Meyers erases another piece of what made South Wilkes-Barre my neighborhood, I&#8217;m melancholy rather than upset.We alumni have our memories; it is time to move on. The taxpayers in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District cannot afford to subsidize sentiment. Public school funding on the local and state levels presents enough challenges without residents and expats of a third-class city demanding that a building that&#8217;s been neglected to the point of hazard be maintained as a misguided gift to their posterity. The young people who would be tomorrow&#8217;s Meyers Mohawks deserve better than that.Generations of alumni have legions of reasons to &#8220;Save MHS&#8221; just as so many pet owners offer rationalizations for refusing to put down a suffering animal. In both circumstances, selfishness masquerades in the happy thoughts of better times.Closing or even demolishing the building at 341 Carey Ave., Wilkes-Barre, cannot nullify or destroy those memories.
