STATE COLLEGE &#8212; North Penn scored the decisive run on an error in extra innings and Wyoming Valley West had two comeback attempts thwarted, losing 4-3 in Friday&#8217;s PIAA Class 4A championship game at Penn State&#8217;s Medlar Field.Valley West had tied the game twice, scoring two in the fifth and another with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game in extras.<hr/>End 7: Valley West 3, North Penn 3Down to their last strike, the Spartans tied the game with two outs on Justin Vought&#8217;s shot off the glove of the shortstop to score Logan Zavada, who reached on his third hit of the game.Billy Gregory nearly ended the game on a shot up the middle that hit pitcher James Witner, but he recovered in time to get the out at first to send the game to extra innings.<hr/>End 6: North Penn 3, Valley West 2The Knights answer right back with an RBI single from Jake Schuster to take the lead. Tyler Yankosky ultimately prevented another run when he caught North Penn trying to stretch for a double.North Penn had the bases loaded with two outs before Justin Montalvo tracked down a fly ball to shallow center to end the threat.Gregory led off for Valley West with a single and went to second on a sacrifice but the Spartans were unable to bring the tying run home.<hr/>End 5: Valley West 2, North Penn 2Ryan Hogan never got his chance to swing the bat to tie the game. The junior catcher ended up scaring the Knights into two runs any way.When the game finally resumed after a one-hour, 19-minute delay, North Penn immediately put Hogan on base with an intetional walk.But with Justin Vought batting, the Knights threw over to check Hogan at first base only to have the throw go flying into foul territory in right field. Brendin Techmanski and Justin Montalvo both scored on the play to tie the game.<hr/>Bottom 5: North Penn 2, Valley West 0At the game&#8217;s biggest moment, Mother Nature intervened.Spartans top hitter Ryan Hogan was stepping to the plate with runners on second and third and two outs when officials suspended the game in the face of a large storm hitting the area.The tarp is out as heavy rains are hitting Medlar Field.On the plus side for the Spartans, had North Penn recorded the final out of the fifth before the delay, it would have been an official game after five innings if the weather ends up wiping out the day.Instead, the game must continue now regardless.In the top half of the inning, Gregory again wasted no time on the mound, this time setting down North Penn with just four pitches.<hr/>End 4: North Penn 2, Valley West 0The Spartans had their best chance to score as Mark Baron singled with two outs, but the Knights quickly got the ball back in to nail courtesy runner Dillon Yuhas at the plate on a 9-3-2 play to end the inning.Gregory retired the Knights with just five pitches in the top of the fourth.<hr/>End 3: North Penn 2, Valley West 0Valley West shook off a deep one-out triple by the Knights as Gregory gets a grounder to third and a fly ball to center to strand the runner at third.The Spartans got their first runner into scoring position on a Logan Zavada single and a sacrifice before the Knights end the threat with a pop-up and a grounder.<hr/>End 2: North Penn 2, Valley West 0An error to open the second ended up coming around to score for the Knights to extend their lead.Jake Schuster went to second on a sacrifice, took third on a shallow single and scored on a Matt Marino grounder. The Spartans nearly turned a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning with no damage, but Marino beat the play to first to score the run.The Spartans got a walk from Eric Raitter before bowing out in the frame.<hr/>End 1: North Penn 1, Valley West 0Mike Christy took the game&#8217;s second pitch down the line into left for a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Mason Nadeau groundout.It was just the fourth run allowed this postseason by the Spartans.Chris Lupole singled in the home half before Valley West was retired.
