PLAINS TWP. &#8212; A good portion of the discussion at Thursday&#8217;s Board of Commissioners meeting concerned the state of disrepair at the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.Although the grounds, off Westminster Road, are not owned by the township, they are within Plains Township. As such, officials took steps to prevent anyone from entering what they feel is an unsafe building earlier this month.Donna Parry of Wilkes-Barre, whose father Leo Tarence was buried at the location in 1989, asked for an update regarding the stabilization of the mausoleum.Township Solicitor Stephen Menn explained that he is in talks with a solicitor from the Luzerne County Funeral Directors Association over securing funding to strengthen the property, so that people can safely remove the remains of their loved ones if they choose to do so.He added that repeated attempts to contact the current owners, whose names were unavailable at the time of the meeting, have thus far been unsuccessful.The property is slated to go up for tax sale in September.Menn explained that the Township cannot take physical action as the mausoleum is private property and that the township is unwilling to undertake such a sensitive undertaking as caring for the remains of people&#8217;s loved ones.The township also has no intentions of using any public funds for the stabilization of the structure.Despite the situation, officials remained sensitive to the concerns of those involved. Commissioner Steve Sax has contacted state officials to look into alternative sources of funding and the Luzerne County District Attorney&#8217;s office to possibly pursue criminal charges against the mausoleum owners.Sax stated that he considers the situation to be a case of corpse abuse.Commissioner Brigid O&#8217;Connor suggested that concerned individuals attend a public meeting that will be held with U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Moosic, at 6 p.m. June 30 at the municipal meeting room.
