Waverly Community House announces Waverly Waddle 5K Walk/Run finalists

The Rotary Club of the Abingtons will hold a Pedals for Progress used bike collection from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 21 at South Abington Park, 642 Northern Blvd., rain or shine.Pedals for Progress collects between 3,000 and 5,000 bicycles annually to give to those in need. To date, more than 143,000 bikes were shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. There, the bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low cost to poor working adults. These bikes provide them with reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting products to market or accessing health care and other services.Bikes that are in working or repairable condition will be accepted. They should be rust free, but may have flat tires or be in need of some repair. Bikes that are rusted, disassembled or &#8220;for parts&#8221; will not be accepted. No trikes.Other items accepted are working portable sewing machines and wrenches.It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle. A monetary donation toward shipping costs is necessary with each bicycle donation, and the suggested minimum is $10 per bike.
