Wilkes-Barre makes list of nation’s most unsafe communities

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; It&#8217;s Election Day, but if you happened to drive past a polling place earlier this morning today, it probably didn&#8217;t look like it.Foot traffic was at a minimum this morning. Officials outside of the polling place at the Arnaud C. Marts Gymnasium at Wilkes University said that not many voters came to cast their votes earlier this morning. Elsewhere, the polling place at the Kingston Municipal Building was also quiet. Officials say that more people have arrived for business with the borough than to vote.Bob Heim was one of the few voters who did show up to cast his vote.Heim, 79, walked from his residence across the street into the gymnasium to vote. He said he is paying particular attention to the city&#8217;s mayoral race.That race involves five candidates &#8212; Democratic candidates Darlene Duggins-Magdalinski, Brian Kelly, Tony George and George Brown and Republican candidate Frank Sorick. The five candidates are vying for the seat to succeed Mayor Tom Leighton, who announced in March that he would not seek a fourth term.Doing his civic duty was something that Heim took pride in.&#8220;Because I live here, I think it&#8217;s important for the city,&#8221; he said. When asked about what he kept in mind when he went to the polls, his answer was a short one &#8212; crime.&#8220;It&#8217;s one (topic) that&#8217;s talked about, and I hope it&#8217;s being talked about,&#8221; he said.Voter turnout in Plains Township, however, was not as slow.Officials at the Plains Township Fire House reported that there was a steady flow of voters throughout the day.Seven candidates are in the hunt for the Magisterial District Judge seat held by the retiring Diana Malast, and there are four candidates running for a Township Commissioner seat.Check back with the Times Leader for more Election Day coverage as the day progresses.
