Hoping to prevent lapse of memories with Catholic schools merger

Mayor Bill Goldsworthy received a letter from Luzerne County Commissioners stating they are willing to change the name of the Water Street Bridge to The Firefighter&amp;rsquo;s Memorial Bridge. The county asks for West  and Pittston to pay for one of the name plaques on the bridge and the county will pay for the other.
So Far, So Good

My children survived the first week of school at Wyoming Area Catholic. Brooke was so excited to meet new friends and see some from the summer reading program at the West Pittston Library. Hunter is glad to be in Mrs. Grove&amp;rsquo;s first grade class. Austin is now in fourth grade and meeting the new teachers and learning the ins and outs of being in the &amp;ldquo;upper end&amp;rdquo; of the school. He loves being able to change class and is looking forward to a great school year.

West Pittston Rams
The West Pittston Rams will take on Larksville today at the Anthony &amp;ldquo;Jake&amp;rdquo; Sobeski Stadium. The &amp;ldquo;D&amp;rdquo; team will take the field at 11a.m. followed by the &amp;ldquo;C&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;B&amp;rdquo; teams. The &amp;ldquo;C&amp;rdquo; team played a great game against Monroe last week. The Rams lost 19-0 but played a great game. The &amp;ldquo;B&amp;rdquo; team rallied to take the win last week 6-0. Good luck in today&amp;rsquo;s games!
Goldsworthy Rally
The Friends of Bill Goldsworthy will be hosting Country Night at the West Pittston Armory tonight, Sunday, September 2 from 7-11p.m. This is the third annual event.
X-Country will be on hand to get your two-step in gear. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased from any borough official.
Sewer Fee?
West Pittston Council is working on an ordinance to impose a sewer user fee. The sewage system in West Pittston is crumbling and bulging and will need extensive work. The fee Council will possibly impose will cost residents $60 a year. The money received will help replace the dysfunctional at times system.
Council reminds residents if the rain gutter system on their homes is attached to the sewer system, it is taxing the lines. Council would like residents to fix the problem and this may give a little more longevity to the system and to help keep emergency repairs to a minimum until the system and can improved. 
No Bicycles
Council would like to remind residents no bicycles are allowed in the borough parks.
Thanks, Golfers
The Parks, Recreation and Beautification Board would like to thank the more than 100 golfers who participated in this year&amp;rsquo;s West Pittston Open. 
Fourth St. Meeting
Twelve landowners near Fourth Street were notified about a public hearing on the vacation of a part of the road. Council stated landowners directly connected to the part in question are the only ones needing notification.
Stackhouse Auto and the former CVS building are the only properties adjacent to the road but Council said it wanted to alert some of the residents who may be effected by the closure.
The special meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m.

West Pittston Council will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 4 starting at 7:30 p.m. 
Cherry Blossom
Members of the West Pittston Cherry Blossom Committee will be taking at picture at the borough building on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. The Cherry Blossom Committee will be distributing their annual donations from profits from this year&amp;rsquo;s Cherry Blossom Festival.
Map Display
The West Pittston Library will be displaying the Pittston and West Pittston Survey Map, done in Philadelphia in 1868. The map includes 15 drawings of houses and businesses that were in existence at that time.
The Friends of the West Pittston Library used the profit from their book sale to pay for the recent restoration of the survey map.
The map is on permanent display at the library. It can also be viewed along with other historical items on September 22 from 11-4 pm, during the Tour of West Pittston Homes. Refreshments will be served during the open house.
Shade Trees
The West Pittston Shade Tree Commission is sponsoring a Fall 2007 planting. Residents of West Pittston who want to purchase a tree for their tree lawn are invited to pick up an application at the borough building, Evans Hardware or the West Pittston Library.
The same form is also available on the tree commission web site ( www.wpshadetree.org).Various types of trees are available. Tree commission members will be happy to suggest appropriate species for specific sites. Any resident who has removed or lost a tree lawn tree is required by borough code to replace that tree within one year. This is an excellent opportunity for residents to do that.
The cost of the tree is shared by the borough, and the trees are planted by the borough.The West Pittston Shade Tree Commission meets the third Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Borough Building.
Volunteers are encouraged to attend to share their knowledge of trees or to learn along with us. Cub Scouts
Cub Pack 352 First United Methodist Church will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at t 6:30 p.m. Any interested children grades 1 to 4 are welcome to join.
