COLTS announces that Saturday service elimination, major route cuts will not take place

WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The Dragon Boat races scheduled for Sunday as part of Riverfest has been postponed until July 11 due to the expected rise in the river level.John Maday, executive director of the Riverfront Parks Committee said Wednesday the change is being made &#8220;in the interest of public safety.&#8221;There is the potential that the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill will cause the Susquehanna River level to rise above 6 feet this weekend, he said. The river runs quicker as it rises, he said. In addition, heavy downpours and lightning are possible, Maday said.&#8220;Everything else with Riverfest will take place as planned,&#8221; Maday said. The training for the Dragon Boats on Saturday and the races on Sunday have been pushed back until next month and will be held on the same day.The weather could turn out to be fine Sunday, but the decision to reschedule has to be made early due to the advance preparations for the Dragon Boat races, Maday said. &#8220;You need a lot of lead time to do this,&#8221; he said.
