New on DVD: May 19 DVD picks range from guns to ‘Glee’

20 years ago - 1995The Back Mountain Memorial Library recently held a Bookmark Contest during National Library Week. Contest winners received gift certificates donated by area businesses. Winner are: Genevieve Blanc, 1st place winner; Philip Walters, 3rd place winner; Jennifer Mines, 1st place winner and county wide winner; Stacia Ciak, 1st place winner; Vanessa Gogates, 3rd place winner; and Jonathan Roskos Dunn, 3rd place winner.There are many talented, humble students at Lake-Lehman. Too many times, their accomplishments are overlooked. Sadly, they don&#8217;t receive the credit they deserve. An example of a modest winner would be Kileen Walch. Recently, the eleventh grader participated in the Special Olympics. Competing in the swimming competition, Kileen won three gold medals. She received one gold medal in the freestyle event and two gold medals in the back event.30 years ago - 1985Linda Richie, a senior at the Dallas Senior High School, was one of five local students to win a recent poetry contest sponsored by Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman. Linda&#8217;s poem, &#8220;Liberation&#8221; was submitted with the cooperation of English Chairman Mr. Donald Hopkins. She attended a workshop, conducted by contemporary poet, Samuel Hazo, and as poetry festival at Penn State Wilkes-Barre in April.The bake sale that took place in front of the Shavertown Acme recently wasn&#8217;t an ordinary one. Selling delicious homemade baked goods were the members of Junior Girl Scout troop 644, under the leadership of Ellen Campbell, Joyce VanFleet and Cindy Evans. The scouts, living up to their promise to help others, donated the proceeds of $108 they earned at the sale to the Children&#8217;s Room of the Back Mountain Memorial Library. Participating scouts are: Jennifer VanFleet, Jennifer Cole, Dianna Emery, Barbie Campbell, Jessica Evans, Jennifer Labinski and Luann Naugle.Last month, the Lake-Lehman Junior High School participated in the state American Industrial Arts Student Association in Harrisburg. They took first place in the Manufacturing and Design contest. They mass produced kites in the Home Economics department and they produced kite winders in the Industrial Art shop. Participants were: Erin Keefer, Mike Strutko, J.J. Konigus, Jason Kirchner, Chuck Hertz, Jennifer Prisper and Dan Shission.40 years ago - 1975The Dallas Junior High School spring art contest, sponsored by the Dallas Woman&#8217;s Club, was recently held at the school. Winners were presented with ribbons and cash gifts by Mrs. Jack Richardson, chairperson of the arts and crafts department of the woman&#8217;s club. Winners were: (seventh grade) Barbara Voitek, Carole Kwasnik, Karen Thompson and Linda Akers; (eighth grade) Robert Masaitis, Eric Johnson, William Corcoran and Kim Thomas; and (ninth grade) Carla Krivak, Joan Otto, Jane Schiowitz and Barbara Frost.Ms. Agnes Gregson, Dallas, will be into Wyoming Seminary Varsity Club&#8217;s Hall of Fame at the school&#8217;s athletic banquet, last week. Ms. Gregson was a 1935 seminary graduate. She has been named to the Hall of Fame in recognition for play as a star goalie on the school&#8217;s 1933-1935 field hockey teams an also for her efforts at guard on t he girls&#8217; basketball teams of the same years.Installation of Amy Appel as Worthy Advisor of the Dallas Chapter of The Order of Rainbow for Girls Assembly 144 was held at the Eastern Star Building in Dallas. Officers installed are: Worthy Advisor, Amy Appel; Worth Associative Advisor, Sara Barakat; Charity, Evelyn Kwasnik; Hope, Karen Hoover; Faith, Cory Zimmerman; Chaplain, Bonnie porter; Drill leader, Diane Nagle; Love, Sandy Jeffes; Religion, Carole Kwasnik; Nature, Karen Bradbury; Immortality, Susan Gramely; Fidelity, Mary Warner; Patriotism, Melanie Williams; and Service, Cindy Duffield.50 years ago - 1965Ground-breaking ceremonies were held on Tuesday afternoon for the new Snowdon Funeral Home on North Main Street, Shavertown, formerly Shaver Theater. In creating the new funeral home, Harold Snowdon and Harold Snowdon, Jr. have placed the emphasis upon home, reflecting the graciousness and good taste of the finest private home. The alterations that will be made will develop the original theater building into a stately white colonial building in the same tradition as the other Snowdon Homes for Funerals in Kingston ad Wilkes-Barre.Ed Baker, Ray Supulski and Steve Kaschenbach are eligible to represent Dallas Senior High School in the state championship track meet Saturday at Pennsylvania State University. In order to qualify, the boys had to place first or second in the District 2 championship track meet Friday night in Scranton.Nine local residents are participating in the Wilkes-Barre Little Theatre&#8217;s up-coming production of the musical comedy, &#8220;Li&#8217;l Abner,&#8221; among a cast of 71. Tony Toluba and father, Anthony Toluba, play parts of Abner and a government agent, respectively. Others in the cast are Roy Morgan, Lyle Slaff, Ted Raub, Adrian Demarco, Dick Oliver, Betsy Dukes and Bob Graham.60 years ago - 1955Marcia Elston was crowned Queen of the May Wednesday afternoon before the largest crowd ever assembled at Lehman-Jackson-Ross for May-Day exercises. Nearly 1,000 attended, with a phenomenal turnout of parents. Marcia was crowned by the Lady in Waiting, Jeanne Casterline. Alice Ide, Edith Mazonkey, Nancy Williams and Grace Major served as attendants, and fourteen girls of the senior class as Court of Honor.Third annual Show of Antiques is scheduled for June 14 and 15, in the Prince of Peace parish house. Mrs. Paul Goddard is general chairman, assisted by Mrs. H. Robert Weaver, who is also in charge of television and radio publicity. Mrs. Jonathan Valentine is chairman of hostesses; Mrs. James Lacy, publicity; Mrs. Lloyd Kear, admissions; Mrs. Charles W. Lee, housing; Mrs. Calvin Hall, invitations; the Couples Club, snack bar; Al Antanaitis and John Sheehan, lights and properties. 70 years ago - 1945The Red Cross sewing classes, conducted by Mrs. Hannah M. Orr of Lehman High School Home economics Department, are concluded. Certificates were awarded to the following: Mrs. Kern, Mrs. Carichner, Mrs. Abbott, Miss Lillian Burgess, Mrs. Joseph Ellsworth, Mrs. H.L. Hendricks, Mrs. Cundiff, Mrs. Howard Egret, Miss Pauline Ehret, Mrs. Francis Lewis, Mrs. A.B. Simms, Mrs. Santi Regno, Mrs. Charles Nuss and Mrs. John Nulton.The Merrimaids Class of the Centermoreland Methodist Church entertained their mothers and grandmothers at a Mother&#8217;s Day party in the church parlors Saturday night. There was a program of entertainment and games. Refreshments of ice-cream and cake were served to the following: Mrs. Jestie Schoonover, Mrs. N.C.
