First Posted: 3/10/2015 I would like to add some fact-based information to Mr. Bill Dress&#8217; statements in his recent letter to the editor (&#8220;Obama tenure not so rosy,&#8221; March 2) concerning Fox News.
He states that Fox News &#8220;dominates when it comes to viewership in every age group and every time slot. &#8220;
The Pew Research Center, based on Nielsen ratings, shows that 71 percent of American news viewers watch local TV news, 65 percent watch network news and 38 percent watch cable TV news. So, cable news is the least watched of television viewership.
CNN reaches 20 percent of U.S. adults. Fox News reaches 18 percent and MSNBC reaches 14 percent.
Fox News, however, consistently beats CNN in the rating wars because of its prime-time programming when cable news audiences are the largest. These cable talk shows tend to focus heavily on a somewhat narrow news agenda that magnifies the day&#8217;s more polarizing and ideological issues. The Pew research finds &#8220;The Nielsen data make it clear that cable&#8217;s audience is staying for a healthy helping of that content.&#8221;
Lastly, the average age of the Fox News viewer is 68.8 and the median age for Fox News&#8217; popular Bill O&#8217;Reilly show is 72 years old.
