I agree with the recent guest column calling on state lawmakers to pass a new system for funding public schools (&#8220;Provide equity in Pa. school funding,&#8221; June 12).State funding cuts over the last few years are squeezing schools in our area. To make matters worse, Pennsylvania is one of only three states in the country that does not use a formula for distributing education funding. That means there is no rhyme or reason, other than perhaps politics, for how tax dollars get spread among schools.That has real impacts on our kids. Underfunded schools are cutting programs, using outdated books and materials, and laying off teachers, aides or counselors to deal with the cutbacks. And school districts are raising property taxes year in and year out because state funding is inadequate.I encourage the residents of Wilkes- Barre and surrounding areas to call your local legislators and urge them to fund our schools properly and to fix the state&#8217;s broken school formula for the long-term.Denise KurnasSaylorsburg
