First Posted: 2/21/2014 WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Sentencing for an inmate accused of planning to hire a hit man to kill a prospective witness in the pending double homicide trial of Hugo Selenski has been continued again.
Michael Joseph Scerbo, 41, pleaded guilty in Luzerne County Court in January 2013 to a charge of solicitation to commit criminal homicide. Prosecutors have previously said Scerbo is facing up to 30 years in prison.
Scerbo was scheduled to appear before county Judge Michael T. Vough on Friday. In response to a defense request, Vough granted a continuance to 9 a.m. May 16.
Scerbo was jailed in the State Correctional Institution at Retreat, Newport Township, serving a sentence on a forgery conviction in Pike County, where he met Paul Weakley, a key prosecution witness against Selenski, and later Selenski himself.
Investigators said Scerbo and Selenski were able to talk to one another in adjacent cells. According to court documents, Scerbo offered money to a &#8220;hit man&#8221; he met in the prison&#8217;s visitation room on March 29, 2012, to kill Weakley. The hit man was an undercover trooper, state police said.
