First Posted: 9/19/2014 WILKES-BARRE &#8212; As impressive as Meyers&#8217; opening drive was Saturday night, it came with a price.
&#8220;When you lose your stud player on the first play, that hurts,&#8221; Meyers coach Corry Hanson said. &#8220;He tweaked his knee on that first carry. He was done for the first half. He tried to play a little defense in the second half, but then I decided not to use him.&#8221;
Without running back Mark Robinson, one of the top rushers in the Wyoming Valley Conference, continuity was fleeting for the Mohawks as Lackawanna Trail finally distanced itself for a 28-16 victory at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.
Hanson believed Robinson would be available for Friday&#8217;s game at Lake-Lehman, but would have his knee examined this week. Robinson had a very slight hitch in his walk on the sideline.
The loss dropped Meyers (3-1) from first to third place in the District 2 Class 2A standings. Trail (4-0) remained in second in the D2-A standings.
Meyers scored on its opening possession, using a 38-yard run by A.J. Mouzone to set up a 20-yard TD run by quarterback Zahir Dunell. Dunell&#8217;s two-point run gave the Mohawks an 8-0 lead.
From there, the Mohawks&#8217; offense was ineffective for the most part. The unit failed to cross midfield on its next five possessions, and Trail begain wearing on the defense with its ball-control running game.
The Lions also blocked a Meyers punt to set up their first score &#8212; a 1-yard run by Cooper Rosiak. Liam Dougherty&#8217;s two-point run tied the score 8-8 at 8:32 of the second quarter. Trail struck again just before halftime when Vic Mallory tossed an 8-yard TD pass to Dougherty for a 14-8 lead.
Trail&#8217;s next two possessions fizzled out at the Meyers 20- and 22-yard lines. But the Lions, using a good dose of running back Jared Phillips, were able to control the clock.
Trail finally pulled away in the fourth quarter when Phillips capped an 11-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown run and Ross Fauquier returned an interception 44 yards for another score.
&#8220;I was most proud of our defense improving as the game went on,&#8221; Trail coach Steve Jervis said. &#8220;It was great to see our special teams be a factor. The blocked punt was critical. Offensively, at times we did well, but I think we left a couple plays out there.&#8221;
Meyers scored with 2:18 left on a 16-yard run by Dunell. Dunell also completed three passes to tight end T.J. Cistrunk on the 55-yard drive.
&#8220;Early on we played well, then we made mistakes we haven&#8217;t made this year,&#8221; Hanson said. &#8220;We put the ball on the turf, turned over the ball three times I think.&#8221;
