Marriage ruling will cause ramifications

First Posted: 5/14/2014 KINGSTON &#8212; Wyoming Valley West School Board President Joseph Mazur answered rumors Wednesday that a new school would be built on a 50-acre donated parcel of land in Larksville.
The board also approved a proposed final budget for the 2014-2015 school year. The board will vote on the almost $69 million spending plan at its next meeting.
The property, which borders Plymouth and Larksville, was donated to the district by the estate of Donald and Marion Munson in 1997, he said.
&#8220;There are no plans for that property as of now,&#8221; Mazur said, adding that the district is awaiting an appraisal of the property and would like to have it developed with &#8220;taxable properties.&#8221;
The board voted to enter into an agreement with the executors of the Munsons&#8217; estate &#8212; Helen Sgarlat and Robert Taylor &#8212; to honor Marion Munson, who was a lover of the arts, by naming the high school&#8217;s auditorium, chorus and band room after her.
A dedication ceremony will be held in the future to recognize the naming of those rooms as the Marion E. Munson Memorial Wing for the Performing Arts, Mazur said.
In another matter, the board voted 8-1 to award a contract to A.R. Popple Construction Inc. in the amount of $118,000 for the demolition of Main Street Elementary School. Tom Pieczynski voted no, arguing that the matter should be tabled to allow time to research whether the school could be used for another purpose, such as for a warehouse.
But Jude Cooney of A & E Group Inc. said renovating the building for any use would be too costly.
&#8220;It would take a lot of work to get it up to code,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We studied it several years ago as part of a feasibility study and all of the systems are old.&#8221;
As part of the demolition project, the board also awarded a contract to Prism Response in the amount of $54,748 for the removal of asbestos.
The board also voted on the proposed final budget for the 2014-2015 school year. The board will vote on the $68,935,293 spending plan at its next meeting.
The board&#8217;s next work session will be held on June 11 at 7:00 pm, with the regular meeting to follow.
