King’s chaplain: ‘Church listening to its people’

First Posted: 12/8/2014 WILKES-BARRE: The Jewish Community Center is sponsoring the Mayrutz Halapid Ceremony, the running of the torch, on Tuesday, Dec. 16. The run will start from Temple Israel and Temple B&#8217;nai B&#8217;rith at 4:30 p.m. The runners will arrive at the JCC at 5 and help to light the outdoor menorah to commemorate the first night of Chanukah. The longstanding tradition, which the JCC has been participating for 46 years, originated in Israel in 1940 when young men would run to distant cities of the country to light menorahs.
The community Chanukah dinner will follow. There will be Lo Mein and Latkes along with a variety of Kosher Chinese food. Cost is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and $7 for children under 12. Children under 3 are free. Reservations along with payment should be made at the JCC front desk. For information, call Barbara Sugarman at 570-824-4646.
There will also be a sing-along with Rabbi Larry Kaplan and Cantor Ahron Abraham.
The outdoor lightings will continue Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 5:30 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 18, at 4:30 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 19, at 3:30 p.m. ; Saturday, Dec. 20, at 6:30 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 21, at 3:30 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 22, at 4:30 p.m and Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 4:30 p.m.
WYOMING: For the 10th consecutive year, The UPS Store at the Midway Shopping Center will be a Toys for Tots drop off point for the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve drive for toy donations. Deadline is Friday, Dec. 12.
The store is also participating in the Marine Corps nationwide Toys for Tots Literacy Program. A donation of $1 will buy a book for a child in need.
